    Faild attempt at logic:

    A is really bad
    B is bad

Because A is worse than B, don't do anything about B.

This ought to be fun. What happens?

Lots of weak arguments here. What TikTok or your phone does or doesn’t do, does not affect your insurance rates. Or violate your in-car privacy. Unless you stupidly install the insurance app to track you for “discounts.”

Also, let’s not forget, the new Lexus GX gives you a warning if your eyes “wander” off road, such as if you observe a beautiful horizon to your left at sneak in some breeze so your face. Eye tracking cameras in cabin, so it gets worse than what our 4Runners do. As if humans don’t have peripheral vision, but… the cameras.

Must be fun to get an insurance reject a claim because your “eyes were off the road for a second or two” whether true or not. And often times it will be wrong and not true, software is not as perfect as those companies pretend it to be. And as long as software is not open source, you can’t trust anything anyone tells you. But I digress.

Ok, I’ll go on my rant.

there is a road near where I live, there have been a few bad accidents, and many more not so bad ones at this particular intersection. This intersection is a main road that is posted 50, and the other road is a side road that cross the main one. There are stop signs at both sides of the cross over road. Because people run the stop signs, there are accidents and now they are putting in a circle/rotary. One example of folks not following the law, now others will have to change their ways. This should not be the way our society operates, but it is.

so, when is say “pay” it’s more than the $$$, it’s the loss of freedoms.

IMG_0543.jpg IMG_0546.jpg IMG_0547.jpg I did call Toyota and canceled/opted out of the wifi/sos service almost 2 years ago, but every time I started it, the SOS lights would dance red to green then finally go off, so today I removed the glove box and disconnected the wires going to the DCM (no more dancing lights at start up), I lost the passenger front door speaker and tweeter in the dash on passenger side, so I plugged back in the middle white wire and got back the speakers. Also note that if you do this you will loose the microphone and I think the ability to connect your phone to the radio, I don't care about connecting my phone to the radio or using the microphone so it doesn't bother me. Does anything I did make any difference? I don't know, but it does make me feel better that the $50K I spent hopefully isn't sending my driving info to God knows who.

Also I have a 2022 ORP non JBL

    Here's a couple of pics

I believe this is law now, and will have to implement in a few years.

Nice job! I assume that device in the photos is the controversial "DCM" that is the heart of the beast? Where exactly is that box located in relation to the glove box? Any idea what all the wires are?

That's odd. I wonder why the speakers would be fed into the unit, and why only one side? Monitoring the volume of the stereo for some reason?

No phone at present, and if I did, I certainly wouldn't connect it to the vehicle!

    IMG_0542.jpg Thank you

It's to the right just behind the climate temp knob, easiest way to get to it and unplug everything is to pull the glove box out.

I can only assume the speaker wires and microphone wires run through it for listening/communicating when you press the button if you were using it. As for what wire goes where I'm lost on that. I do believe that the bottom 3 plugs are antennas

@hvac guy you win the award for what I will now call, "Ultimate Antispyware Mod!"

I'll be pulling things apart and working in there as I intend to do some upgrades to the audio system. I also want to see if I can put Pedal Commander in the glove box. Not sure if the wires are long enough, but it looks like they might be.

The big black box behind the rear-view mirror annoys me. Maybe I'll get used to it.

This has happened to you? your insurance has been increased specifically because of the data Toyota collected on you?

I really hope someone figures out how to fully pull the DCM box out and regain the front-right speaker and microphone.

I took out the CarNet module out my GTI but someone did figure out the wire bypasses to keep the microphone and I followed the instructions and boom GTI is "off the grid" and got to keep the mic.. If there's a way to do it on the GTI, there's gotta be a way to do it to the 4R.

I'll second that, although I have no need for the microphone.

I think this is the plug that he had to put back in. According to my notes, violet (+) and pink (-) are supposed to be right front speakers and light green (+) and blue (-) are supposed to be the left front speakers. The picture seems to show all four wires. It's odd that he only lost sound on the right front speakers when pulling that plug. Also, if the signal goes into that plug then it must come out ... somewhere ... to get to the speakers, obviously. When I get this far I'll have to test that plug and see what's connected to what and how. I'll be replacing all of the speakers, so this should be an easy test for me. As for the microphone, no I won't be testing that.

What voice commands will the vehicle accept with no phone?

/BEGIN RANT/ I actually do not have a cell phone any more. Life is so much better without it. Many people who have unplugged find themselves much happier after they get over the shock and anxiety of breaking the addiction. I have had friends lock their phones in a metal lockbox when they visit me to see what happens to them. Most are reluctant to even try it. "What if there is an emergency," they say! "Um, other people do have my phone number if they need to reach you at my place because they have an emergency." "Oh, yeah I guess so." Then, within 15 minutes, every time, they start to get really fidgety. Most people completely break down and some outright panic within an hour. Try it on family and friends and have some fun. Oh, and the whole data and tracking thing obviously is not an issue in my life since I don't carry a phone! :)

The phone to me has fallen deep into the most unimportant aspects of my life. I have no subscriptions, no cloud, etc etc. I use it for the most basic and mundane tasks. And it does not go everywhere with me. And that’s not abnormal for me or anyone around me, we all were around before all that nonsense got out of hand.

It really doesn't matter what you carry. Anything that connects to the internet, your home Wi-Fi, or whatever. It's all being tracked by someone or something. From a refrigerator that lets you know you are running out of something to a Rumba vacuum cleaner is tracking you. We are all being tracked by something or someone or both. I am not paranoid as it sounds, I have been in cyber security for several years and seen the worst of the worst. As many home security cameras as there are out there, stop light cameras and so on that you drive by every day, they are tracking you. You can unplug anything you want, but next time you use an ATM, smile for the camera. The next time you buy something online, game over they have you. There is no such things as security and everything about being tracked...

This is true, but for me it is 98% less than almost everyone else I know. It took me days of research and 9 pages of notes to take the spyware out of Windows 10. I'll be taking the spyware out of my 4Runner too.

You are literally posting on a public forum from a monitored Internet connection.
The algorithms are already tracking you. So if you do not carry your phone when you leave home to buy bread and milk is completely irrelevant. Even crossing a red light in your 4runner is a data entry.
Unless you are self sustainable, off grid with no communication to the outside world, your data is still being collected, the only difference is quantity and type.

If you just want to block signal, the well-known "tin foil" works.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it5Vx4LA8r4

I had one of these on-hand:

    upload_2024-3-26_21-45-41.png

I decided to use it to test friends and family since it has a key, and I have the key. It is amazing how some people freak out because I have the control because I have the key. Wait ... ask yourself this, is it me who has the control, of the phone owner who has the control, or is it the phone that has the control? Who is controlling what?
