Maintenance required message

Does anyone know how to reset the maintenance required message when it pops up at 5k on a 2016? I knew how to do it on my Corolla but not my T4R. Also did any of you guys do a oil change at 5k? The dealer told me this 5k service is only tire rotation and fluid check/topped off etc... I know it's synthetic oil but I'm thinking of doing it anyway

 

Turn the ignition “off” Press and hold the Trip Odometer Reset button, and turn the ignition switch to the “On” position. Continue to hold down the Trip Odometer Reset button until “000000” MILES appears on the display and the maintenance light turns off

Great info. As for the oil, i'll be doing mine at 2K, 5K, and every 5K after that. I don't care what the manual says, 10K is not an option for me.

 

changing the engine oil at 2K on these is not required in my experience with this vehicle. I changed my oil @3K miles because of a long trip down in the warmer regions .. so when I did this oil change the oil/filter all looked perfect .. unlike a GM engine as I have changed the oil on GM engines @1K miles and it was pretty bad.. SO I was asking why these engines are so clean when new .. What I found was toyota runs these engines with a special oil .. a breakin oil then does and oil change.. so that is why its so damn perfect ..

I am @8K miles now so 5K miles on the oil change I did .. NO oil use and the oil looks perfect.. like new..

my GM 2000 truck I do 10K mile oil changes .. all synthetic mobil 1 with synthetic medai oil filters again the oil looks perfect 170K miles on it uses 1/2 qt over 10K miles... much better than a new GM truck LOL...

 

I'll change it at 5K anyway. I'll change it clean, oil will always be clean, I don't believe in "wait till it's worn out" to replace it. Your oil can never be too fresh. To each his own though, whatever works for you.

 

the mobil 1 synthetic oil is good for 10K miles ... the oil does not break down , engine management is very tight so oil stays good. my GM truck has 170 K miles going on 18 years its a truck ,it works , NO shopping mall princess ...uses 1/2QT in 10K miles not worn out never fail emissions etc... original converters and muffler system .. I also have a 21 year old vehicle as well works perfect..no oil consumption replace oil once a year...

the T4R is not a work truck ..

Oil companies do love the $$$$$$$$$, go for it! 10K+ on synthetic, no worries. It's a TOYOTA.

 

I think the filter is the weak spot. The oil can last 10K, but I don't want to risk the filter breaking down. Small investment doing it at 5K, considering what we paid for these things. lol

 

the 2016 runner oil filter looked like I just installed it 7500miles..that is why 10K IMO is good for me ..

if you drive in dusty or off road , then I would do the oil changes with lower miles..synthetic engine oils 100% are not creating sludge or other wear debris .. that is why when I used conventional oil on my pre 1996 vehicles I did the oil changes @3500-4K miles ..more work and higher costs but that was decades ago ...

 

I dont like the idea of waiting 10k to do the oil change,especially the first "break in"period.I didnt get in for the 5k service til about 7300 and had them do the oil change.I'll wait the 10k for the next,only because its free for the first 2 years,after that I'll be doing it myself at 5-7k.I know these newer cars and newer oils can go the 10k,but old habits die hard.

 

First oil change at 2k, again at 5k, every 5k from there on out is the only way i'll do it. $60 peace of mind, very cheap as far as i'm concerned.

 

So far I've changed my oil twice. Granted I live in Alaska and most of these miles were in the winter. Since the manual says to change at 5k intervals if used below freezing I will always do 5k oil change intervals summer or winter. It is a very cheap way of going the extra mile for the $40k investment we all spent. I want to keep this thing for 20 years, 15 as the wife/family car and after that another play rig for me to go wheeling in.

• 500 miles - noticed a few small metal shavings in the oil filter, normal break in stuff. Definitely glad I didn't wait longer
• 5000 miles - started to get a little dirty, no metal shavings at all.

At 10k - 20k I want to change out the diff fluid since both of those should be broken in by then.

 

I'm going to do the same thing with my diffs when I get around 10K. I did this on my 2012 Tacoma, and there was a lot of metal particles on the magnet.

 

Guys changing diff oil around 15K are reporting BLACK oil and quite a bit of metal on the magnets. I will be changing mine at 15K, front and rear, with Mobil 1 synthetic 75-90 and I will change them every 30K or so for the life of the truck. Same as I always say, it may be overkill but so what? Cheap insurance and peace of mind especially since I'm rolling around on 295's which are roughly 90 pounds per tire and rim. Transfer case will be done every 30K with OEM Toyota 75 weight oil also. My 2016 has 11K miles on it, I don't drive a lot. Going to take me a long time to wear this thing out. I recently saw an article with a 5th gen, 2010 to be exact, with 0ver 500K miles on it. Original engine, tranny, diffs, everything. Also saw a tundra that froze at 999,999 miles because the odometer didn't go any higher. I would love to reach that point 50 years from now lol.

 

I changed mine at 2500, then will do every 5k. Diffs will be done early too. I’m keeping this rig for 30 years or more, so I want it to last. Oil is cheap, engines and transmissions are not.

 

the rear diff being a component that works all the time does create break in heat damage to the gear oil. this is why the gear oil does get black... break in , if you do not operate the new runner for long runs on hyway before 500miles... then after that the gear teeth should be good, but still some added heat will will gradually be reduced to a normal amount.

the drive train fluids should be checked every oil change and condition.. if it looks wrong then change it..

the transfer case 75wt gear fluid is very special , has additives that is specific for this component... very expensive and comes in cans ...

many will not pay $60-80 for a QT so they use the mobil synthetic 75-90wt..this mobil gear oil will not properly protect the transfer case so IMO should not be used.. now if you do the transfer case fluid change and are a little low adding the mobil gear oil a couple of OZ should not effect the operation ..
