Had some friends visit this past weekend that I hadn't seen since my wedding (8 years ago). We grew up skateboarding together and had an amazing time catching up. One of them was looking for something cooler than just hitting up parks so I did some research and found out about a town named Two Guns that has some ruins, the Apache Death cave and an abandoned campgrounds with an empty pool. It was just over 3 hours away and we didn't know if it would actually be skateable but we were off! Happy to say we got to skate, see some bad ass ruins, get a little driving on RTE 66 and have an amazing dinner in Sedona on the way home. Absoulutely great day!

A new contract has me working 12-hour shifts during the day, and it's not working well. Despite the battery can recover by recharging during the day after the dinner-sleeping-breakfast use. The water heater cannot heat the shower water from ~70F in the morning to ~100F to shower in the two-hour period from getting off at 7 pm and going to bed at ~9 pm. While the day temperatures are beginning to reach upper 70F in the desert. The night and early morning temperatures continue in the 40s. If I am too much of a wimp to shower in the 70F evening temperature with 70F water, it's not going to happen in the 40F morning temperature with 70F water. Not that it's a choice for me either, as I am not a morning person; I would have to wake up and shower between 4 am and 5 am to be at work at 6:45 am if I heated the water while I slept. On that note, while I am okay with heating the water while I sleep, and it may be doable to heat the water for 12 hours while I am at work, I am uncomfortable doing so without being present in case something goes wrong. Nonetheless, staying in the desert is great, even if it's only to sleep.

 

Is that a mosquito torch poking up on the hood? I like the solar panels, how many watts do they produce and dollars did they cost?

 

Not a Tiki torch. It's the weBoost OTR antenna. I purposely placed it in front of the driver to assist me with the clearance of the bicycle rack on the top. If the antenna will not fit in a parking structure, neither will the bicycle rack which is at the same height.

Tried out the new Rev Tent this weekend. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for an RTT that doesn't weigh a ton and can be taken off and on easily. Would recommend another mattress to add to it or a memory foam topper if you prefer a plushy feel.

 

Cool! I think I've seen simliar mounted on the front bumper. Are you a hammer?

Ha, that's awesome! If I ever win the lottery my family will have to host an intervention to prevent me from starting my own ww2 vehicle museum. To get started I'd probably try to find a T-34, Sherman, Cromwell, Tiger, Panther, various half-tracks, Spitfire, Lancaster, Mustang, B-17, B-24, Me-109, Ju-87, Ju-88, and Me-262. You know, just to get started.

Of course I'd then have to start the small arms collection as well with Enfields, Brens, Mosin Nagants, Papashaws, 98k's, MG-42's, Stg-44, M1s, M1 carbines, .30 and .50 cals, Springfields, Thompsons, BARs, the list goes on.

Not that I've thought about how else to waste money or anything

 

I hope you sprayed some WD40 on those tracks before you started pulling.

Took the new 4Runner off road a little today. Nothing big, just dirt roads and snow. My buddy who also bought a 4Runner a few days after I did, also came with.

Battle born for the win! I love California, but if I had my way, I'd live in the hills somewhere near Reno. And I would not try to turn Nevada into California. The only state with legal weed, ho's, machine guns, true off road driving, bomb ranges, and lots of shiny rocks!

Very disappointing performance by the Navy this trip. I need to figure out when they're training. Only saw one high-altitude dog fight, nothing at all near the deck. I was soooo hoping they'd drop some flares on me.

And some white utility truck was following me around range B17, came out of nowhere, but never got close, just lurking. I assumed military or some bored contractor.

 

The Fallon base is there to train carrier air groups (all those F-18 Hornets on a particular aircraft carrier). Don't know if the schedule is available to the public as to when a carrier air group will be coming in for training. But when they are there at Fallon is when you see all the activity at the various ranges around Fallon.

After the Navy bought out all the ranchers in Dixie Valley they restricted access to most of it, including the Horse Creek area. Up there at Horse Creek there was a beautiful reservoir just up from where you took a pic that the ranch used to irrigate their fields with. People kept ignoring the No Trespassing signs and going up to the reservoir to fish so the Navy blew the reservoir up. At that time, if you were to drive off the main Dixie Valley road Security was right there to stop you. But after a lot of protests the Navy relented and began allowing recreational use of Dixie Valley. I'm originally from the east coast; got here courtesy of the Navy. Stationed at Fallon 1969-1970. Been spending a lot of time in Dixie Valley for the past 50 years.

The Base at Fallon will be expanding dramatically soon, mostly to the east and south. The highway to Gabbs from Middlegate will be moved eastward, the gas line to Gabbs will be moved far south to accommodate a desert training facility for SEAL teams. Watching the rock at B-20 being bombed while I was camped in the Stillwater Mountains. The jets were all around me, darn near skimming the sagebrush but I was not fast enough to catch one with my camera lens.
