What I'm reading is the best 5th gen years are either 2020+ with TSS and Carplay/Android Auto, or 2010-2012 with ugly front end but no pesky SAIS.

On the contrary, most the comments I see are people looking down their nose at the new safety stuff.

2020 is the worst because it has the safety nannys and the crappy halogen headlights.

    1. 2010-2012 not the best, 2014-2019 is the sweet spot for the most simple longevity imo. 2020 safety features AND halogen does sound like the worst year :p

    2. I can totally understand why some like the safety tech and some don't. It's great stuff, but I dislike the extra costs when it gets in the way of mods cuz I'm not a bone-stock kind of dude

    3. It's not about "pushing one button" being, sarcastically, too hard . For some, driving a vehicle the old school way and actually being present and more alert in the moment, is safer.

I enjoy the safety tech in my company vehicle, but any service bills don't fall on me. I doubt it's going to be hanging around as long as my 4R. But will the 4Runner safety tech last as long as the 4Runner itself. Everybody likes the automatic gadgets until they need to be replaced or at the very least their failure annoys you with Dash warnings and ding dongs

    I've seen quite the opposite.
a LOT of people here hate on the 2020+ because of the safety nannys.
I wonder if anyone who complained ever drove a newer 4R? Because unlike many other vehciles, all the safety nannys can be turned off on the 4R, also both cruise control and adaptive cruise can be used (many new cars have either one or the other).
So yes, I agree it's not the best adaptive cruise on the market, but if the reason to complain is because cruise control is better, then why not just use cruise control? And if the wife or whoever else would rather use adaptive cruise they can do so.

So why all the hate on the latest model years? Wouldn't that be the BEST years, since there's literally the option to drive it like a 2019 or older by turning off the safety features if one chooses to do so?

    edit: corrected typo

    I state reasoning ^
-even if the features can be set to off which I admit virtually negates the downsides (essentially put in standby or sleep), I can't help but think the tech will fail long b4 the engine and drivetrain
-more expensive, more complicated bumper repairs, or more expensive to mod bumpers
-absurd windshield cost, yes I know ppl who have good insurance (not British Columbians) don't mind
-its safer to pay attention and not drive a self driving car

This is the only way I can understand why one would choose a 4R without the new features. Although most dont mods to an extent they would have to worry about these (except for @Yotaholic )

Yes, I was replying to your previous message when you posted this.

I agree with some of your points :)

Regarding cost, I think it really depends on the buyer and what they want. I would hate it as well if my insurance didnt cover the windshield but I've had full glass coverage with no deductible on all my vehicles so it's $0 for me no matter if I had a 4R with or without TSS

Points well taken. I don't begrudge anyone wanting the safety stuff, especially since you can no longer buy a new 4R without it. Neither side needs to disparage the other. To each their own.

    I don't consider my 2019 odd at all. :p

I’d say it’s safer to pay attention and allow the safety nannies to kick in when needed, because humans are not perfect and shit happens.

I would argue that the 2020 is the BEST year, despite the headlights... which can be upgraded.
    • The 2020 has all the safety stuff - much of which can be turned off. As time goes on, more and more cars/trucks will have these safety features. Not having them limits your market if you (ever) sell it. Anyone remember trying to sell a car without airbags or just the driver airbag... or without ABS... or... you get the point. There was a time when when seatbelts seemed annoying.
    • The '20-'24 infotainment just looks better... it just does.
    • The 2020 is the most affordable of the last version of the 5th gen.

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.

FJ40 and 80 series have none of that, but many will buy them.

Lol "self-driving car". The modicum of TSS features in 2020+ 4Runners is like 2 generations behind the latest systems in Toyota/Lexus and 3-4 generations behind the latest from Tesla and Mercedes Benz. TSS functions in 4Runners are considered so basic and mass-market, even the 70-series Land Cruisers have them.

Not to highjack thread but someone mentioned needle bearing issue which I remember reading of a while back. Is that more mileage based when it occurs around 7k they said? I ask because I have a 21 ORP with only 1k miles (due to some health issues and planned only summer use to avoid rust). So would time show needle bearing issue or maybe mileage ? Sorry not to highjack thread topic feel free to dm if easier

No deductable on auto glass is a law in many states.

I think it also depends on the use of the 4R to decide whether or not one wants the new techs or not.
If the primary purpose of the truck is to go to nearby off roading areas or if it's a rock crawler then it'd make sense to want as little tech as possible not to interfere.
If the 4R is a daily driver, a road trip vehicle, or an overlanding rig from which a lot of pavement driving will be done and some mild off roading far away, then it would make sense to want adaptive CC, carplay, etc...

Similar to the debate of removing the front sway bar. It really depends on what is the primary use of the 4runner

I fail to see how the new technology would "interfere".

a lot of small bumpers dont block TSS but for those who want bigger bumpers with bull bar, TSS will not work anymore. So if one would want to go that route, it would be pointless getting a newer model. Also same might apply to BSM and some rear bumpers.

Like I said before though, most people will not modify their rig in such a way that it would be an issue

I think those who feel that modern technology compromises reliability of newer 4Rs are overlooking that fuel delivery and ignition have been completely computer controlled for ages.

Regarding TSS and BSM, I think the aftermarket will catch up to those. There are already some BSM-compatible rear bumpers available and I recall reading about at least one successful TSS relocation.

I wanted a physical key and no sunroof so I had to buy used. Maybe its me, but often I see autos at stoplights & their blind spot mirrors aren't showing me next to them. I try to pay attention if it's toyota & see how reliable the blind spot really is. As someone who has never owned an auto with blind spot, how accurate is it?
