Lound snap when starting to move from stop

Hi all,

The past few days I have notice a loud metallic "SNAP" from under the vehicle when I begin to reverse out of my garage. I also noticed it once when moving forward from a stop.

I have no idea where to start besides taking it to the dealership which I would like to avoid if possible.

I’d get it checked out before driving a bunch. Very difficult for us to troubleshoot over the internet.

 

With no information as to year and model, it's even harder to offer any help.

 

It is most likely the main spurving bearings in the turbo encabulator.

 

Maybe have a friend take a video? Then post it here. Could be a million different things...

 

Do you use the parking brake? The shoes can stick to the inside of the rotor hat when parked overnight.

The unilateral phase detractors must have fallen out of alignment, causing side-fumbling. But the mere mentioning of "turbo" will trigger some 5th gen owners.

 

Make sure your sway bar end links are properly connected.

Correction, I meant to say sway bar bushings/brackets.

 

Time to update the spurving bearings to the encapsulated semi-spherical roller type.

 

Kind of old school here but could it be corroded needle bearings in the u-joints?

 

sometimes its the rear brakes that make that noise for some reason.

 

You're thinking 4th gen. 5th gen encabulators run on capacitive duractance. As such, trammy pipe phasing with the needle bearing is critical to effectively eliminate side fumbling.

The snapping that I mostly hear is my knuckles gripping the steering wheel and my neck hitting the head rest when I hit the loud pedal from that massive HP & torque launch.

 

Does it feel like slack in the drivevline? Have you lubed the zerks in the last few years, Based off of the year you have (Didn't see it listed)

 

I'm not sure if the OP is going to return. The only reason I mentioned the sway bar end links was an issue I created myself. It wasn't the sway bar end link but rather a sway bar bushing I didn't refasten after I installed my lift. It could be any of the things mentioned but maybe he or someone else did the same.

 

That's an interesting possibility. I'm not the OP, but my truck has done the exact same thing he described (one loud, single metallic clank, always first time backing out for the day and never again). Mine started immediately after I had my lift installed. Unfortunately, I couldn't take it back to have it checked where they did the install (HeftyFab), because I moved out of the state the next day.

 

I'm just glad it was the only thing I missed It's easy enough to check.

No details from the OP, but if it's an older vehicle the sway bar bushing could jut be bad:

Mine is a '22, and was quite new when they did the lift install last year. But at least you gave me an idea to check.

 

I hope it's as simple as that.Just check that the rubber bushing is even still there and of course the bushing bracket itself. If that's wht you find please let us know.
