I just got a 1994 4Runner with the 3vze engine and it came with the harmonic dampener pulley not attached. I’m told the timing was just done and the crankshaft bolt was simply not installed. It was driven this way for 200 miles until it came off and chewed up the fan. Now I really can’t trust anything that guy could have done.

my theory is that there’s supposed to be a bit of the woodruff key sticking out from under the timing gear. This is not what I’m seeing, so I have nothing to line up the harmonic dampener groove onto. Here’s a picture of what I’m seeing can anyone tell me if this is what I’m supposed to be seeing?

Welcome. Is there a slot on there for the key? Keep in mind that the key could have sheered off and almost bonded itself to the shaft.

Thanks. No slot I can see but I like your theory. It looks like there’s metal inside the groove and the engine seems in time so maybe the part holding the gear is in there?

Yeah, it looks like there's a key in there, or worse, part of a key.

There will be a key of some kind otherwise, the pulley will just spin around the shaft. I would try to look for an exploded parts diagram of the pulley and key.

If it's not a broken key, that could also be a wrong-sized key in that slot.

Ok good points. My key is not what it should be. How do I fix that? Do I have to redo the timing to take that timing gear off? Let’s assume I’ve never done that before

What if I just stick a rectangle in the groove as it is to line up my pulley? Would that hold?

I agree with @steelevo , a diagram would really help. There's a good chance that I don't correctly understand the best way forward.

Almost all of the keys are made from treated and hardened steel. Don't just use any piece of metal. I would take it apart and get it done right. There is also no harm in double-checking the timing belt install for anything that may have been missed.

Ok thanks for the advice. I ordered a new key and I’m just gonna have to learn to operate

Yeah, you want to redo the timing. Anyone who forgets to install a bolt like that is NOT to be trusted. When he did this job, he obviously threw parts everywhere and lost the crank bolt. Who knows what else is missing?
