Hello everyone! Just signed up to do some research. I owned an 87 1st gen 4Runner back in the day. I’ve been itching to get one again soon. I’m hear to get educated on what to look and watch out for when buying a 1st gen.

Here is on I’ve been looking at...

    $$ Mint 1986 4runner 22re, 5 speed 4x4 with Removable Top $$

    https://knoxville.craigslist.org/cto/d/mintrunner-22re-5-speed-4x4/6625686587.html

    Good deal??

Glad to be part of the group! I’ve also loved and let go a few Toyota trucks.

Welcome to the site  the price seems high to me but I don't know what they go for around where you are.

so KBB.com will only go back to 1992 but just for fun this would be a 1992 2 door 4runner in Knoxville's approximate private party sale value with 233000 miles:

I know that doesn't often accurately represent what these sell for in any way but that is what insurance or a bank will say is the value. The one you're looking at does look really clean though, good luck on your search

Yeah, I've sold a few Tacomas and they always go well over KBB value. Not sure if it's the same for 1st Gen 4R's or not. They do seem to be priced well above though. My biggest concern is having hidden rust issues or the engine. The ad doesn't mention any engine work.

that was one of my other concerns, they seem to have done everything but engine and tranny.

These are no longer a dime a dozen (supply and demand). I would like to have one myself. That being said, if it's in really good shape, and you've got the scratch, do it.

I'd want to see pix of the engine bay and undercarriage. I started browsing a few weeks ago at early 4Rs....they can fetch a premium IF in decent shape. I'm not seeing it as being "completely restored" but maybe my definition of restored is different than the sellers. ;-)
