    I have a 2003 V8 4WD Sport Edition that's coming up on 300k miles.

No issues currently except the suspension which is pretty much shot. My plan is to take off the stock X-REAS suspension and replace it with KYB struts/shocks all the way around. I don't do any hard-core off-roading so I think the KYB components should work fine.

My question is this: what else should I think about replacing at this point in the life of the vehicle?

Everything is working fine but I'm getting ready to go cross country and I don't want to get stranded in the middle of West Texas because something that I could have easily replaced failed at the wrong time.

    Any suggestions?

Timing belt, water pump, etc I believe should be done every 100k.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

This is from Toyota. Apparently, when you pass 150k miles, they don't 'recommend' anything anymore. I guess that's up to you. But here's what to check for 150k miles:

    Maintenance Schedule for Toyota 4Runner
    Select Your Mileage
    150,000 Mile Service
    (Estimate: $495 - $587)
    What to Expect
    • In addition to all that is performed at the Intermediate service, the 150,000 mile service is where you may see some of the fluids replaced, such as the brake fluid, engine coolant, and transmission fluid. It can also include replacement of the spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter.
    • A more comprehensive checklist of inspections may also be included. Each shop and vehicle manufacturer may vary the actions performed so be sure to refer the maintenance schedule in your owners manual.
    • If this service is performed at the dealership, they should also take care of any necessary recalls.
Additional Repairs That May Be Necessary

This. If you don't know when the timing belt was last serviced, you should most definitely have that done. Water pump is replaced with the timing belt, as is the thermostat. Another thing to consider replacing with timing belt/water pump is the fan bracket for the engine fan as that comes off with everything else and is a wear item.

Anything else is just normal maintenance.

Change the spark plugs and check the coil packs for cracking when changing the plugs too. They can and do wear out with that much mileage on them. I replaced all 8 coil packs on my 4runner at around the 328k mile mark.

Change the air filter: engine and cabin filter.

If you've never serviced or don't know the last service for the gear oils, have the front diff (if 4WD), transfer case (if 4WD) and the rear axle gear oils changed.

Check the transmission fluid level. At 300k, I probably wouldn't change the fluid but you still need to check the levels. I did change the fluid on my 2003 and haven't had issues but that isn't always the case. 2003 4runners DO have a dipstick for the trans fluid.

When you are replacing the XREAS crap, check all the ball joints too, especially if they are original.

XREAS is the same exact concept for the 4th gens. Might even be the exact same system.

I'm assuming you have a 4th gen when asking this question. You can completely remove the XREAS system and replace it with non-XREAS. It's cheaper and is a direct bolt in replacement at each corner. Just buy standard 4Runner parts for a non-XREAS 4Runner.

Do a search on the forums as there are many threads explaining this with replacement parts suggestions.

XREAS has been an option since 2003 for 4Runners. Good system when new but very costly to replace parts on. XREAS on the 5th gens is more refined and probably even more expensive to replace.
