Hi there! I have been having a strange issue on and off for the past year or so, and have been unable to diagnose it, nor has the dealership. After driving my car in snowy conditions and leaving it for a while (at least a few hours, but usually overnight), it feels as if the wheels are locking up on me when trying to drive. It only happens while going forward, reverse is totally fine. From what I can tell, it happens anywhere below ~32°F, and only when it has been driven in snowy conditions (the problem doesn’t occur when driving all the way down to below 0°F so long as it’s dry). When trying to pull out of a parking spot after a cold start, one of two things have happened (and don’t necessarily happen every time, just sometimes):

    1) It feels as if all 4 wheels are locked up, and the car cannot move forward. It feels as if the brakes are fighting my pressing the gas to try to go forward. The only way I can get it to move is if I put it in 4L and fight through the first few yards, then can switch back to 4H/2H. While I am sometimes able to get it going, while moving the rear of the car makes a constant thumping noise, and it feels as if brakes are being lightly applied at all times.

    2) In very slick/icy conditions, I have had my car lock up just one wheel, which results in my car sliding sideways instead of forward when applying the gas from a dead stop. It only slides to the left, never right. Most of the time when this has happened, I just have to give up and try to find a way to get it back into my driveway and leave it. The one time I was able to get it going, I had to scoot forward and back for ~10min until it finally could drive, but then every few minutes it would make a loud thump followed by a screech, and my car would lurch.

I’ve taken it to the dealership to try to fix this, but they’ve been unable to replicate the issue (for some reason even under the conditions I describe above, it doesn’t always happen). About two years ago they pinned a broken left rear speed sensor as the culprit of a dashboard lightshow (that funnily enough wasn’t accompanied by any physical symptoms), and said they fixed it. My suspicion is that these issues are related to the speed sensor system/wires/something, but I’m not certain. Does anyone have any other insight as to what it could be or how I could get it diagnosed if it doesn’t want to misbehave on command?

It is my pure speculation, so you may disregard everything I said here: have you ever change or overhaul brake calipers? since 2010 most likely caliper pistons stuck due to rust and not retracting back after brake pedal released. high temp on contact with freezing temp outside create condensate that iced fast and "frost-glue" pads to rotors.

The speed sensor or abs sensor would not cause the issues that you described. It sounds like a mechanical issue with the brakes themselves.
