Best "aggressive" looking tire with *street* performance :D

So my wife drives the 4Runner and I'm trying to keep her from wanting a new vehicle. She wanted a ladder, I bought a ladder. She wanted running boards, I got them too. Now she wants bigger tires that look "off-roady" .

We almost never drive off road, but enjoy the 4Runner for all the other things it does well. So I'm not really interested in lifting it. Reading on here, most agree that the largest size tire for stock suspension is about 275/70/17. Looking at those, most (all?) are E-rated and I'm reading about lots of problems balancing the heavy tires, especially the KO2s. So now I'm thinking about just finding an "aggressive" looking 265/70/17 tire. Planning on buying a set of the black TRD Pro 17x7" wheels (see below) for them.

So which tires look aggro but perform well on the street? PFA (that I stole)

PS. Would like white-letter tires, but not required

 

I think the new BFGoodrich Trail Terrain T/A's are good looking. They kinda look like the All Terrain T/A's, but are more all season. They get good reviews, and I'm planning on getting them when I need new tires.

And these are the tires that are coming on the new Tacoma TRD Off-Road.

I'm thinking if I'm realistic with my tire needs, I should go with these.

What I'm running. I love them. Next set will be E load though just incase I get further off the beaten path.

 

The Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT, Falken Wildpeak AT3W, and BFG KO2 have aggressive sidewalls and shoulder lugs, but perform decent all around. Out of the 3, the Mickeys would be my top choice right now.

There are other similar options, as well.

 

People might poo-poo these, and I don't know why. Maybe because they're not a "boutique" brand? But, they're made in S. Korea by Kumho, and I've had great results with 2 sets on my 4R. And you get Discount Tire's great replacement policy and free rotations. https://www.discounttire.com/buy-tires/pathfinder-at. Can't beat the price either. The only negative I'll give them is that they get a little noisy toward the end of life.

 

Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail are on my shortlist for most of the reasons you listed. I also just stumbled on to Falken Rubitreks but they dont come white-lettered. Neither will break the bank nor (more importantly imo) the scale.

I am personally running MT Baja Boss ATs, I have also had Wildpeaks, KO2’s and Nittos (stay away if these if live in wet on snowy climate bc the SUCK). But if I wanted a good tire that’s less aggressive… I’d go Pirelli’s. They are 3 Peak mtn snowflake rated (severe snow service). 50k mileage and are very quiet.

 

I'm a big fan of the General Grabber ATX tires. Great performance both on and off the pavement and they handle winter weather wonderfully (3 peak rated) and are a bit more budget friendly than the BFG KO2's (and they do have white lettering on one side if that's what you wanted)

I had 2 out of the 3 you list and agree those options you stated are the best all around do a little of everything tires. I wanted the Mickeys as I’ve never tried them and heard great things but not in stock that day. I was traveling and only in town for that day so went Wildpeaks as they were in stock.

 

Falken Wildpeak in standard load 285/70/17

 

Tires with less than 50 aspect ratio to minimize sidewall flex (forget about offroading), now it becomes solely a traction game. Bigger the lugs/treadblocks, the larger the channels between them and the smaller the total contact patch with the ground becomes. So that immediately throws out classes like MT's followed by AT's. Buy 'aggressive' looking tires and you won't have 'street' performance.


EDIT: Sheesh, my bad for mis-interpreting the OP's goal of 'street' performance. You'd think I'd be wiser than making the assumption of street performance being, aka, MOPAR performance...

 

i beg to differ. Mine handles just fine in dry, rain or snowy weather. Also, you could have the best tires in the world, but if your suspension is not up to the task of spirited on-road driving, youre wasting your time. I changed out my stock suspension at 16 miles on the odometer with Bilsteins, it was night and day.

 

I have these on mine, and stock size standard load, and they've been fantastic. I have about 56k on them so far and they're wearing evenly and still have a good amount of usable tread left.

Haven't gotten much snow this year, but the last 2 years I was very impressed with their snow performance. They're also pretty quiet, ride smoothly, and do well in the rain in regards to hydroplaning.

The only problem with them is that they're not available in more sizes and load ranges.

Whew. I was hoping at least one person would say KO2. Just bought mine...

 

I'm keeping my eyes on black side wall, winter rated- all weather, SL, light weight tire for my non offroading 4runner Limited. Cooper Discover AT4S have really good specs but low customer satisfaction in comfort.

When I went to Discount tire to have a looks the sales guy showed me Cooper Discover AT3 XLT and said it's the same. Wanted to say stop the BS, but kept quiet.

Since my Limited is not offroading wish I could have Goodyear Assurance Weatherready or Michelin Crossclimates in size 285/70R17.

 

Mud terrains by far. But they suck on road.

 

Lol. I have them too, they are the jack of all trades. Best selling truck tire for a reason.

 

"By far" what, missed the point? He literally said he wanted something that looked aggressive but performed well on the street.

 

Mud terrains look the most aggressive by far, you can't argue that.

 

We have the Toyo AT3's on our 4Runner and the BFG Trail Terrain T/A on the GX460. Both are great choices. The Toyo's are a little more aggressive, but both perform well and are 3PMSF. If I had to pick, I'd say the BFG are the better street tire.

 

Sure I can, and say a viper cut isnt needed at the same time.
