    Hi!

Please me kind as I'm certain I'm asking a really stupid question. This is my first 4x4 Toyota.

Picked up the vehicle with 225k miles, front brakes needed to be changed. Tried to do the job myself but the rotors appeared frozen and despite my pounding they weren't coming off. Took it to a great local guy who agreed they were stuck on there pretty good, ok fine.

Today I attempted to replace my wheel bearing/hub assembly as they're screaming at me on the highway and I again could not get my rotor off. Every video I've watched shows that once you get the caliper off the rotor should just come off, especially one that was installed less than 1k miles ago. I tugged and tapped it with a rubber mallet but it definitely acts like something else is still holding it on.

One thing that is different about my truck than any other that I've seen in a video is that I have this black sleeve around the hub. I don't know what purpose it serves or how to get it off but I have to assume at this point it's what is keeping my rotor on there. I really have no idea, could be totally wrong too.

Included photo so you can point out my stupidity. TIA.

I had the same situation helping a friend last year with his 4th gen. You're right, the rotor should just come off. We resorted to using a small sledge hammer (soft hammers did nothing for us) on the back end of it as we were replacing them anyway. Don't hit them if you're keeping them. Try PB Blaster or something. The surface of the hub must be stuck to the rotor.

Brand new rotor so can't bang too hard on them.

The rotors we had had some threaded holes in the face, near the studs. You find a matching metric bolt and thread it in to push the rotor off the face. I don't see holes in your rotor though.

    Got it on video here:

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
The black coating on the new rotor is a corrosion preventative applied at the factory to prevent corrosion before installation. The area under the pads will wear off very quickly during the bedding process.

Others have already shown how to get it off, so no comment.'

HI Pat, thanks for the reply. Will try to do a better job searching.
In terms of the "black sleeve" I'm referring to the tube like deal that extends over the dust cap. I haven't seen that on any of the other 4unner videos i've watched.

agreed, PB blast away and mini sledge it. May need some heat as well to loosen things up

The black sleeve is a hubcentric ring or center cap for some aftermarket wheel. It needs to be removed before the rotor can come off.

I wonder if someone installed it from behind the rotor. That would definitely cause the rotor to be super stuck on the hub!!

The sleeve looks pretty thick. There's no space between the hub register and the rotor hat.

@ElTrucko just needs to pull the sleeve first. It's probably on there tight (to avoid slop), and aluminum on steel probably generated corrosion. Tap it with a wood or plastic hammer.

Once the sleeve comes off, the rotor should come off easily, since it's new.

thank you!! This is what I needed. Although my attention has been focused on the rotor I did spend a little time trying to "knock" that sleeve off and it really is on there good. However, knowing that needs to come off will give me a new place to focus.
