Does anyone use an air horn or train horn on their forerunner? I am pretty excited about the idea but I'm on a pretty tight budget. Lol I've been checking out hornblasters, Amazon, and been doing a little research. Can anyone recommend one on the low end of the cost spectrum? Lol

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I don't have one, but I've given it serious thought. When I had my Tacoma, I was going to install this one:

I know this is for a Tacoma, but I bet the 4Runner is some-what (maybe?) similar when connecting & mounting it.

    None would be lowest cost.

Once upon a time I thought it was cool and was going to get a full hornblasters kit but then realized that it was kinda lame and only dudes with lifted Dodges blast them in parking lots.

If you want to get an air horn, and price is a main concern, look into something like a WoLo Bad Boy compact air horn. You'll need a relay, but it's pretty loud for being a compact air horn. Despite the instructions saying you just have to transfer the OEM horn wires to this unit, that's never worked for me, I've always had to install a relay to get it to work.

I don’t want to blast it only in parking lots. I want to blast it anywhere I see someone looking at their phone instead of the road. Or when someone enters the freeway at 50 when they have the acceleration lane to get up to freeway speed. I’m sure there are more opportunities. Lots of stupid people out there.

Yeah you don't need a train horn. Be better at defensive driving.

Someone a few towns over from me was recently busted with $30k of stolen locomotive horns. Maybe they'll have some at the police auction.

Stop being so mad behind the wheel. There's bad drivers everywhere and it doesn't matter how many times you toot your widdle horn.

Years ago a friend installed a train horn on his tow truck. It was scary loud! I think he had a onboard compressor for the air source?

Guaranteed to stop all traffic in their tracks for at least a 1/2 mile radius. Also guaranteed to get a ticket from your local unhappy policeman.

I would put a compact air horn like that Wolo unit on any vehicle I have, all day, every day. OEM horns are notorious for being wimpy-sounding (the ones on my '23 Limited are no exception), so upgrading the OEM horns to a compact air horn, or louder trumpet horns (i.e. Fiamm Freeway Blasters) is money well spent. People put dumber stuff than louder horns on their 4Rs.

I replaced the OEM horns with a set of Fiamm Freeway Blasters, and they're a little louder than stock. I would've installed a Wolo compact air horn, but I wasn't in the mood to deal with mounting and wiring up a relay.

I like train horns because I love hearing them on trains. I like how they sound in valleys. A properly applied train horn is a beautiful thing when done in the line of duty. They appeal to my inner 10 year old. I’m talking about proper air powered horns, not the disappointing electric ones.

But people like to be assholes with them, which is unfortunate. It sullies the beauty of a well applied blast in the right circumstances. Yes, I’m being a fancy pants train horn purist.

That said, train air horns have absolutely nothing on a steam powered horns and whistles. Some train engineers are artists in making their trains sing! But not sure if it’s worth the risk to have a fire stoked steam pressure vessel on my daily driver :p

If the person has their head down buried in their phone, or head turned sideways yapping at their friend, or doing something else that's distracting them from walking right into you, then yeah, they should be screamed at...I've been riding motorcycles for 40 years, and having louder horns and a brighter headlight is my little way of stacking the deck in my favor against all those distracted cagers out there. I won't treat them any different if I'm in my 4R...

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” I'm at that point in my life where it's time to let distracted alpha-hotel drivers know about their remedial driving skills. A nice loud horn is a good way to point that out to them...
