Hey everyone, I’ve looked everywhere for a answer, nothing in owners book, every time I start my engine my doors auto lock, and if I forget to hit unlock when it’s cold out and I’m starting my car I get locked out, anyone know how to disable this?

I don't think these cars had remote start from the factory and my locks don't lock when I start the car...so I think you have an issue with an aftermarket system.

If you don't have remote start, then I don't know how you get locked out.

With that 4R operating normally, are the doors supposed to lock when you put it in Drive, as with other vehicles? I think my 2001's doors locked when placed into Drive. If so, maybe a shift lever position or switch problem, where the truck thinks the lever is in Drive (or something other than Park). I don't know how to disable, though.

Welcome. As @negusm stated, this is more than likely an aftermarket security/ remote start system. This will have to be disabled in that system, either by a setting in the unit or manually disconnecting the lock trigger wires.

Mine doesn’t do that. It will automatically unlock the doors if you shut the door with the key in the ignition.

I feel like I’ve heard of others having this problem, mine isn’t an automatic though

Agree with others. If this is an aftermarket remote start, disconnect it and get rid of it.

That's what my SR5 does. No auto locking but it does auto UNlock if the key is in the ignition and the doors shut.

Alright thank you, I’ll take a closer look, it’s done it for the 2 years I’ve owned it, it dont think it has an alarm of any kind because I’ve broken into it a few times and it didn’t come with key fobs or anything I have to manually unlock and lock doors with a key, and I’m guessing if the shift position sensor had something to do with it I’d have trouble starting it if it thought it was in gear, it also unlocks when I turn the engine off, it’s a weird one but thanks for the replies

Before you start shooting the Toyota parts cannon, why don’t you go get a $25 key fob & program it!

That reminds me, with the key fob, when you unlock, if you don't open a door in 30 sec, it relocks the car. Dunno if that has anything to do with it.

I hate dealing with used cars anymore. Dealers (and individual sellers) seem to only have a single key. Then when you ask if they'll discount the car $800 because you need to get more keys and fobs programmed, they get real cranky.

Last car I got for my daughter, the market was so bad, I just had to suck it up. Luckily I knew the fobs were cheap. Still cost like $200 for fobs, keys and programming though.

FWIW my wife and I have identical '98 Limited 4 runners. The ONLY difference is mine is green and hers is white. Hers has always auto locked the doors when the ignition is turned on. It also unlocks the doors when turned off. Mine however has never done this and I'm glad. I feel quite sure that the auto lock and unlock on hers is a factory feature/annoyance. Don't understand why these two identical Runners would be different but they are. OH..sorry. the ONLY other difference is that hers came with factory installed driving lights. Mine did not. Both have alarm systems.

Actually, you can turn the ignition locking off for the RS3200...see page 18 in the link above for the 3200.

So your difference is probably just your alarms programmed differently.
