So I just came back from a 2 week vacation in Utah and my 4R has been sitting. I drove it to work today and could smell my brakes the entire ride to work coming from rear passenger side. Its a 23' with only 4k on it. I do remember my father a few years back when he got his 17' brand new and complained about the same thing. Does this happen often when they sit you can smell brakes? Assuming its just burning off some sediment or oils from the rotor?

I don't think it's the breaks. It probably is the tires and the asphalt compound that is used in the manufacturing of these. When they are pretty new they tend to "breath" if you would, and that's what I think you maybe experiencing. My 2c.

My question is how could you tell the smell was coming from the rear passenger side while you were driving?

It’s under warranty - I’d run it to the dealership and have them look at it. Won’t cost you anything. Then, if something turns up later or it gets worse, the issue will already be documented into Toyota’s service system - and any dealership in the country can see it.

If you have a dragging caliper, the wheel will get hot to the touch. That's a way to verify.

I concur with everyone else who said to take it to the dealer, calipers should not be freezing on a new vehicle.

Oh, and you didn't have the parking brake on at all, correct? That might do it too.
