4WD not working in my 97 4Runner limited

Hey everyone, I know there is a number of posts about this issue, but i'm a little confused on how everything works and all the abbreviated stuff like the solenoids and what not, so I'll just explain the problem. 4wd was working and then all of a sudden I turned it on and it didnt work. When i press the button I can hear something sounding like something is trying to engage. I havent seen the inside of the transfer case before or know exactly how everything locks together for the front wheels to engage, so bare with me. I thought maybe just the light wasnt coming on, but I gunned it on a gravel road to test and its definitely 2wd.
Tomorrow I will switch the solenoid hoses to see if it works, but from the sound that Im hearing, i have a feeling its a transfer case problem.

Update** I switched the vacuum lines on each solenoid and then it seemed to work. The light came on when i press the 4wd button. didnt get a chance to turn in tight circles on pavement to see if it was actually working. Does this mean it's a bad solenoid?

 

So you switched the hoses and the non-working solenoid worked?

 

No I’m not saying the non working solenoid worked. I’m saying I used the other solenoid to trick it.

 

Did you swap the hoses, electrical, or both to do this test?
