I recently purchased a 2023 SR5 premium in white cap to replace an 2019 SR5. I was set on getting lunar rock however due to some unforeseen circumstances (time) and lunar rock not being available in the SR5 premium - I chose to go with white.
Now I have the ability to pick up a 2023 TRD off road premium in lunar rock just two months after buying my SR5.
This TRD ORP is in lunar rock and was a dealer loaner That they are now ready to offload after just 3500 miles for 46,000

    My SR5P has 2600

they have yet to get back to me on trade value for my SR5P. I am sure the dealer will undercut and I don’t really think I want to pay 6-8000 dollars on a vehicle that has more miles and pre-owned but the color and extra “perks” are a huge pull.

    any thoughts ?

How unhappy are you with your white SR5P? If your heart is truly on the lunar rock, the ORP is an awesome trim. If you think the juice is worth the squeeze, at the end of the day, it is your money

Eh, the manual transfer case lever is probably the biggest draw for me and that comes at the cost of the sunglasses holder, but ultimately no one can answer it but you when your quote come back.

I don’t think I could justify it but you can pore over them with a magnifying glass to really know what you’re trading and at what price.

Are they offering the ORP as a certified pre-owned, with any extra warranty? Without knowing what the trade offer is, it's hard to say. The ORP is a step up, and is the color you originally wanted...

lol this is a decision driven by color preferences.. no one can tell you what to do…

if it’s based on math and value.. no this is a poor move

Instead of Toyota offering models with "appearance" packages, i.e. Sport, 40th Anniversary, and the like, just imagine if they had offered a model with the manual tc shifter, but without all the crawl control type stuff. I think they would have sold a ton of them.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

    +1 to that.

This is mainly why it's a poor/bad move: You're going to pay MORE just for a color change; and you may wind up paying 6-8K more. Not only that, but you'll lose warranty. The Lunar rock will have a warranty, sure, but not the full length warranty.

    Don't do it man.

The decision is ultimately up to what you can live with. I would look at what the price difference would have been originally, between the two. Also, are you in a state where your trade in will offset the taxes on the new one? Having to pay taxes twice adds to the expense. Also, you’ll probably have to pay licensing fees again.

ORP is being offered as a certified pre-own — balance of the manufacture warranty.

Yes it would suck to have to pay taxes again. I bought the SR5P in cash with my previous runner also going towards it

? Haha. Let's get the story straight. FWIW, I would stick with what you have and add modifications to suit your needs. You're never going to come out financially ahead in this trade. Spend the money on some cool shit.

Doing something like this will never, ever make financial sense. Wait till you see how much this will cost you. Hard pass.

Tally up the upgrades you can purchase with that money. If someone’s putting a gun to your head to spend a few additional thousands of $s - Would you pick your sr5 with thousands in upgrades, or a bone stock 2nd hand ORP, for a superficial color preference.

But that's not your current situation, right? This isn't a matter of car vs no car, but rather color vs color. Or did I miss something?

I think it comes down to how long do you expect to keep the vehicle for. ~20+ years, then yes definitely do the trade, you will regret it otherwise.

When I got my first 2010 4Runner I wanted Red color but couldn't find it and ended up with grey SR5. I got used to grey but when I saw red 4Runner on the road I sort of envy it. But I wouldn't trade my grey, to me paying few grands extra for color was out of question at the time. And in the end I liked grey somehow better than red, probably because there are lots of 4Runners but that one was mine. When I was shopping for a new 4Runner I was thinking about grey too, but I saw Lunar Rock and decided that I want it. This time I was lucky and got TRD Off-road in Lunar Rock exactly as I wanted. It's a really nice color and it doesn't show dirt as much as other colors.

So if I were in your situation I would probably trade white SR5 to Lunar rock TRD Off-road and although I really like this color, to me it wouldn't be purely for the color - I like manual 4x4 shifter and rear locker which comes with TRD Off-road. Also I don't like 3rd row seats in SR5 - they take space in the trunk. If you have that extra money it always nice to have a little of extra joy when looking at your truck : ) I wouldn't worry about extra mileage, my old 4Runner only issue was park/neutral switch, which is common after about 6-7 years for 4Runners, there are of course might be some other problems, but they are very rare, mostly caused by mods or poor maintenance. My 2010 SR5 had some dents and scratches from off-roading but it ran like new after 11 years and 160K miles before it got t-boned on intersection and totaled as a result.

I could be out of my mind but I remember reading something about the first couple years of SR5 5th gen’s coming with the manual shifter, shame it landed when BOF SUVs fell out of style.

Like the 3rd Gen Taco Trail Edition. IMO that was the perfect package. Cool wheels, mild lift, and rear locker. THAT should have been the 40th Anniversary 4R.

Yeah, my friend has a 2012 SR5 with the manual shifter.

I think it has less to do with BOF SUVs falling out of favor than manufacturers trying to make them easier and more car like to use when buyers started flocking to them as family vehicles in the 90s/early '00s.

I also imagine that it's easier from a manufacturing standpoint too.

My 2010 SR5 has manual shifter, no 3rd row seats and rear parking sensors. Not sure why Toyota dropped it after few years, for family vehicles we have Limited or TRD Sport. To me SR5 is a basic off-roader which is best for modifications.

If you were the Toyota owner who keeps their truck 15-20+ well maintained years, I’d say don’t sweat a few extra thousand for getting the truck you truly love. In fact, I’d say even order a ‘24 exactly how you want it and enjoy many years of happy ownership.

But you went from a ‘19 to a ‘23 of the same trim and now thinking of another ‘23. Chances are, like most people, you won’t have even this other one more than 5 years. So I’d say don’t do it, not worth the hit.

I personally only buy the model, trim, and color of a car I love and plan to keep until it falls apart. I’d never settle, so much so that I waited a year and a half from my deposit for mine to arrive. For a picky long term buyer like me, it’s more worth taking the hit.
