I've owned other vehicles with over 100K and original exhaust tip was still clean. My 2023 ORP is already caking on the goo. Could this be a result of poor quality gas? Been using Woodman's (grocery retailer) since new now just over 4k mileage. They don't put any additives in like the higher priced stations. Doesn't help having ethanol in everything either I suppose. If you think it's a fuel quality issue, what brands have you had the best luck with? I'm not ready to start giving her Italian tune ups yet. Thanks for the input. 0201241717d.jpg 0201241716a.jpg

Flat black sooty coating inside of exhaust pipes is perfect

it's an inefficient engine. all the cars I've ever owned had soot. If you're averaging 17 or 18 MPG that's a lot of carbon coming out after 4k miles.

It's a Toyota. Engine is probably fine.

I was just taken back as wife just sold her 2010 rav4 v6 with 200k and pipe was clean, same cheap gas. That engine was just as inefficient (but just as much fun). Maybe it's just another quirk I need to learn to love about the 4runner.

Ask your wife if she cleaned the tip. Or maybe someone did. Or maybe the soot gets "caught" somewhere else or something.

OP: haven't you adjust ignition timing via so-called "tuning service" ? you were eager to "Can't wait to get rid of the lag!" - so why are you complaining that gasoline in your engine is not burning properly, or you use non - OEM oil that has a low burning temperature? we need more info from you to answer you question properly. are you warming up engine? are you revving up a cold engine to enjoy engine roar with your beer buddies? there are so many ways to screw up a new engine ... all up to you

Valid point about the ECM flash I had in December as I've considered a reflash back to original. I'm going to try a few tanks of the better fuel first to test correlation. And, no complaints, Wesley Crusher, it was just a question on a FORUM.

With less than 5000 miles, it's still the original OEM oil.

And yes, you caught me... I leave for work at 4:30am but sometimes get up earlier, call my 'beer buddies' over and rev it up, but only on the coldest days.

"With less than 5000 miles, it's still the original OEM oil." even the original oil already diluted. time to change it. first break-in oil change at 1K miles, 5K is a second oil change, and so on, every 5K, if you care..

Does it smell? If so your just burning off the new crap. Any new exhaust will smell & that how you know it's breaking in. It should go away soon

I checked mine, looks about the same other than some drips of coolant and oil.

For sequential fuel injected vehicles, tail pipes are typically fairly "clean." Mine adheres to this thus far. Direct injected vehicles tend to be "sooty." Carbureted, leaded gas vehicles tended to coat their tail pipes w/ darker particulate during city driving and light grey particulate after highway driving. These are my observation at least.
