New 2nd gen Surf owner

Hi all, 2nd Gen Surf owner here. 94 KZN130w chassis and body, mint shape. With a 2.4L 2Lte TD swapped into it. Why is there a 2Lte in place of the 1KZte? I'd love to know. Found out after I bought it. Whoever swapped the predecessor in place of the 1kzte probably just had the 2Lte available at the time. NOW. I'm tackling the rear hatch assembly, so far I fixed the rear window, the helper coil spring wasn't properly installed. Window goes ALL the way up now. Rear wiper thinks 7 o'clock is the docked position and rear defrost doesn't work. I'm in wet and dreary BC Canada so I'm trying to get this fixed. Going to clean up position sensor on wiper motor next. Working on getting a relay module but 1 thing at a time. Already replaced all 6 relays on that Power window module but that wasnt the issue.
What I could use a hand with is the rough start up. Have to turn her over for a while if its been sitting. Lots of smoke, struggles and shakes for a minute or 2 then smooths out. Temp here has been around 5-9degC or 40-50degF. Ordered some glow plugs, should see them in a week or so. Any other ideas? 1 fella told me to install a 1 way check valve on fuel line before filter. Anyone done this before?
