    Hey gang,

One of the lift gate supports has failed on my wifes 21 4runner. We added a ladder for easy access to the tent and ski gear.

I want to replace both OEM lift supports with something that will support a little more weight (the ladder). Do you have any recommendations for these?

You might be able to find stronger ones, but because there are a lot of variables like collapsed and extended length, it might be hard to source. I found these on RockAuto. I just replaced the rear hatch struts on my 2011 with these. They're rated at 211 lbs. each. The price is also right. OEM IIRC was something ridiculous like $70+ each. I can buy a lot of these for that price. I'm not sure what that ladder weighs, and I assume it's aluminum, but having two new struts should be more than enough to lift and hold that set-up. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=12479205&cc=1447036&pt=1404&jsn=450

You can buy heavy duty ones on Amazon. I had to install them after I added sound deadening to my liftgate and it wouldn't open all the way anymore. They are actually marketed for the ladder. Little bit of research and you'll find them.

Handy tools will be vice grips and a 2x4 to hold the liftgate up. Replace one side at a time.

Plenty of videos on YouTube to show you how to do it as well. Super easy.
