Hollow clunk from rear of truck

I have a 5th gen sr5, just hit 300 miles and it has this random hollow bump or clunk noise coming from the cargo areA, maybe underneath when I hit larger bumps. Anyone experienced this? I also get a little clunk from under the console arm rest occasionall . Again this is brand new, bought it with 20ish miles on her.

 

I think I might have the same issue you're describing in the cargo area.

Did some searching a while back and somebody else with the same problem had discovered that it was the latch on the rear hatch door. That is what my noise was coming from. A little bit of electrical tape wrapped around the striker fixed it for me. I redo it every once in a while after the tape gets worn.


It's like the striker is just a little too skinny for the latch to grip it tightly and not jiggle on large bumps.


I have no guess on the console arm rest noise.

 

How about wrapping the actual latch ("striker") to make it thicker? Come to think of it I did that with a vehicle years ago I think the tire rack on an Explorer. As you open/close the thing that'll wear too and need replacing.

 

Thinking the hatch doesnt grasp the striker well enough? This piece? Guess that's possible.

I wrapped electrical tape around the rear most section of the striker (closest part to you when standing behind the vehicle)...not the top or front part. I used a piece of tape long enough to wrap around it like 3 times.

 

If this works in going to the dealer and starting an issu .

 

I’ve been having the same clunking noise in the rear. Especially noticeable on washboard roads. Inspected the entire suspension system. Here was the culprit. Open tailgate above your head. On the tailgate, remove the plastic cover that’s over the latching mechanism. Check to see that the three 10mm bolts are tight. If not, remove them one at a time, clean them and apply a bit of thread locker. Re-tighten. Mystery solved for me!

 

Same issue here, for me though the tools to change the tire dropped down a bit and were moving freely around everytime I hit a bump.

 

What in Tarnation is going on here with these issues with new Toyota’s! Are they trying to be like GM / Ford!?

 

Is the spare tire loose underneath?

 

I had the same issue. Always check the simple things first!

 

Take it in in to the dealer! Maybe the bolts that hold the window assembly in place are loose...I couldn’t stand that.

 

Spare tire loose, jack loose, do you have a hitch receiver in place?

 

Is this cover held on by adhesive or only clips? I am hearing this same clunking noise and thinking this is the culprit. However, it's below zero temps around here so I'm not sure I want to try to pry it off if it's held on by adhesive like the 4th gens are. I might not be able to reattach for months until the temps are warm enough. Thanks

 

If you search some of the other threads, flipping the striker around also works. Worked on mine when I did it a couple of years after it presented. It has stayed quiet since. If I remember right, there also was a solution whereby the striker was hit with a block of wood and hammer to bend in slightly.

 

Well I popped off the latching mechanism cover somewhat accidentally. All three bolts were already tight. I'll try flipping the striker around next, but I'll need to pick up a torx bit/wrench large enough to fit the two bolts.

 

LetsTacoboutit, I flipped the striker around last weekend, and it did the trick! I never would have tried this as the striker appears to be symmetrical. Thank you!

Flipping the catch and/or tightening my jack in the corner cubby addressed this on my 4Runner. Just bumping for others that may be searching/chasing a clunk from the rear of the vehicle.

Kind of bummed it was that easy as I spent hours retorqing my suspension and skid plates etc…
