Here is a simple mod I did to illuminate the 4x4 selector switch.

First step is to remove the switch from the trim. Once you do that, you could just pull off the knob.

    knob.jpg

Used an orange 3mm LED that came prewired. wrapped in a bit of electrical tape for a pressure fit. Insert under the knob indictor as shown here.

You may have to trim some plastic to fit the LED/wires. I am pointing to the areas where I trimmed.

    trim2.jpg

Once you've figured out a way to make space for the wires, you can re-attach all the knob pieces together. Make sure everything fits and is secure.

    ......................

Drill 2 holes as indicated to run the wires from the LED. First hole is near H4. Drill close to center so wires won't rub against knob when rotating.

    drill1.jpg

You can remove the bottom white piece and you can see where I drilled the 2nd hole.

    You can get power from the gear indicator light. I did a little mod about that. Here is a link for info;

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/brighter-gear-indicator-lights.34238/

*You may want to add some quick disconnects here. I realized it after the fact in case you ever need to remove the center console pieces in the future. I did not take a picture of this part.

    power2.jpg

You can tap from any power source you want. The way I did it is it will come on when the corner lights/headlights are on.

Here is the final result. Enjoy!

I don't think electrical tape would be my first choice to hold something in but other then that looks good.

Looks great! It was the same on the 2nd gen Tacomas so one guy came up with a small LED board to fit in the switch. The light pipes were already there but it just wasn't lit from Toyota.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
This was great. Thanks for the directions.

Now, can you wire up the overhead switches so they illuminate? I want my home link buttons, sunroof button and all the buttons in that cluster to be lit up. Can ya' make that happen for me?

I modified how I mounted the led. Here is how I did it after the fact.

The lettering on the sunroff buttons are not transparent like the 4x4 selector swith so this type of mod won't be doable like this.

By homelink do you mean the garage door opener buttons? If yes, those are already illuminated.

Yeah very good point. I ended up modifying how I mounted the LED and posted it above.

I did that mod to my 09 tacoma, got the led board years ago, it worked perfectly. It would be nice if it were that simple in the 4runner,I'll ne looking into this mod for sure

I didn’t realize that the knob was lit internally. I thought the small directional light in the overhead console was the only means to see the knob at night. Cool mod but I only off road during the day.

    Good job, thanks for sharing.

Yeah, it's dark up there. I worry about accidentally pressing the SOS button.

    Thanks!

I am working on a mod that would light up the white push in button as well. I'll update here once I get the light and work out the details but should be a very similar process to before.

This!!! Did Toyota never imagine that people would open or close the sunroof in the dark?

And why a seperate switch for opening, vs lifting? My old Nissan frontier had one switch for both functions. When it was all the way shut, just push it forward again, and it would lift. Very easy to find and operate in the dark, without taking eyes off the road.

    Which also makes no sense.

I bet more people use their sunroof, than have garages. :/

That's the way it should have been designed from Toyota. Good job!

I go by feel. Plus if you’re in 4wd, it is indicated on the dash.
