3 Blink Turn Signal

Sorry I'm late to the dance, I just got a 2023 4R (I'm learning the lingo!) in November 2023, but there are two things that bug me about this awesome truck:
1. No 1-touch 3-blink lane changing options
2. Old fashioned sun-visor with cheapie pull out extension

I found this thread that deals with issue #1 so my question is: does this mod work on a 2023 Limited? Is anyone making/building/SELLING 1-touch-3-blink mods for plug and play? 'Cause I want one!
I'm impressed with the electronic skills of members on this thread, as I have little understanding beyond recognizing some of the words in English.

Also, why hasn't Toyota update 4Runners with the blinker and visor mods, as it has on nearly all other models, including Camry and Tacoma?

I'd appreciate any and all comments. Go easy, please, on the newbie...

 

It does not currently. In 2020, Toyota added the flasher relay to the instrument cluster so it is different connectors and wiring needed to make it work. I know where all the needed wires are, but I am uncertain if it will illuminate the dash lights that correspond to each blinker. I am thinking it would not. Still need to build and verify though. If it doesn’t, I’ll need to figure that out before I would consider it done. Nobody is currently selling, although I believe @daveeasa may once I send the original to him

 

Would this ever develop into a plug & play module, with no splicing/pin modifications necessary?

 

The one I have in our 2017 is plug and play as far as connecting to the vehicle. The harness has to be made but that does not modify any of the vehicle wiring

 

If it ever does become available, I'd be all over getting one. I'm like @SROak - electronic modifications/wiring diagrams leave me staring in wonder...

 

I would be willing to build and sell a known working final solution. I’d say it’s still at the R&D phase right now.

I also have my hands overflowing with existing orders so I’m not really ready to add sku’s right now.

Ordered connectors to attempt this on my 2021. Should be the same as your 2023.

Been running it on her 2017 for a month or so now with no issues. Sourced some connectors to avoid solder joints where possible. Ordered some extra connectors too to make 5 additional modules for those that may be interested

I just got my 4R and keep hitting the signal for the three blinks instinctively.

Well having a CDL carries tons of weight. literally... And has much more drive time and training than any non CDL driver. Would like to see a non CDL driver pass an inspection driving with over 26,001 lbs...

The point i think he was making is 3 blips of a blinker is not enough to communicate a lain change properly in many cases. Blinkers are meant to communicate with others on the road, not just notify of intentions and act. Just look at what you are calling it "Comfort blinkers" there should be nothing comfortable about changing lanes with minimal communication. Driving virtually alone on a road, sure "Comfort blinkers" are a great option.

 

^The driver can make a judgement whether 3 blinks is enough depending on traffic conditions. In light traffic it's fine. In heavy traffic you just click down the stalk (vs. tap) and the blinkers blink until canceled. Remember the 4Runner is a lot shorter and more nimble than a haul truck. In any case you're far ahead of the Accord coupe- and CRV douchebags who don't signal lane changes.

Tap-to-blink has been a standard feature on newer Toyota designs (like 2016+ Tacomas) for many years. Standard setting is 4 blinks, and can be adjusted for more or fewer blinks thru Techstream.

 

In all honesty, this mod will only apply to those who want to do it and those who don't want to contribute can perhaps keep it to themself to avoid thread clutter. Proven point was already discussed in several comments above as the "3 blink Turn Signal" its been on OEM cars/trucks for decades now. No disrespect to any comments, but I believe this is getting out of topic.

 

Yes, it's a feature that's been out for years and should be used in combination with long signaling. Think some just want to emphasize there is good reason to use longer signaling and neither should be an exclusive way to communicate.

 

I completely agree with you!
But to me, is a moot point that has no solid ground. I can't tell people how they should be driving etc. The majority of people back on my hometown (NYC) don't use turn signals at all, so go figure.

The video in post #87 shows the 3 blinks with no other vehicles around.

Now I ask the pro 3 blinker crowd, why bother to even lift a finger.
And come up with something more than "it's the law".

 

For those that have done this, any updates?

 

Only update I have is that I got parts in for my 2021 today. And some for the 2014-2019 kit. Probably will start wiring tomorrow. The one in our 2017 has been working flawlessly for the last few months.

Anymore kits available? I have a 2015 SR5 PREM (with the Diode Dynamics hitch pod tail as turn harness, if that makes a difference)

@laxman09, what year do you have? You technically asked first and I have enough parts for a 6th kit for the 2014-2019 if that’s what you have.

For everyone interested in a 2020+, I have the parts to develop a prototype but have been waffling about which way to go. Theoretically could abandon all stock wiring and it’ll work fine. Downside is no indicators on dash. Second option is use the SmartTap to feed the instrument cluster relay as if the SmartTap was a human input. Downside is the arrival and departure lights would be standard hazard flashers instead of solid. Third option, and the one I am leaning towards would be to combine those two options. Feed the instrument cluster to keep indicators and put the outputs on the SmartTap. Should function fine except when your arrival and departure lights are on, the dash would be indicating that your hazards are on

 

I unfortunately have a 2020. Looking forward to seeing how things develop though! Thanks for the tag!
