I had the same issue with my 2022. I had taken it to the dealership last year and they got the key fobs working, but there are no longer beeps when I lock or unlock even though the volume is maxed out. Has anyone had issues getting the beep volume back? Has the carista helped anyone?

UPDATE: Carista was able to solve all of my problems with a free trial. I was able to get the beep back when locking my door and set the beep volume all within the app. There is also an option to enable/ disable the wireless key function, so I assume anyone who has lost that ability could regain that function. I was able to get a scanner off Amazon for 25 bucks and fix all the issues myself and now have the options to change other features.. would highly recommend just getting a scanner and doing everything yourself rather than having to deal with the dealership.

I read this thread a while back but today wasnt even thinking when I changed the volume of my lock/unlock 'beep' the truck makes  Of course, key fobs completely inop and then I thought back to this thread.

I was on my lunch hour, so I went home and fired up the old Acer laptop with Win Vista that I keep TechStream on. Admittedly, I bought Techstream some time around 2012 when I bought my 1st Toyota. Its obvs an old version. When I connected it to my 4R, I was a little nervous as my version of Techstream only lets me pick up to a 2013 4Runner; but it will let me pick up to a 2015 Prius. I figured what the heck, selected 2013 4Runner, and was able to get into the SKS menu to turn wireless remotes back on. And much more.

While I was in there, I also changed my rear wiper delay to 5 seconds (default from factory is 3 seconds, and wipes way too much for me!). So not a total loss....

If you do not have Toyota Techstream software, it sounds like you can do some of the same things with Carista. Its always nice to have what the Toyota Techs use IMO. I am going to look into updating my version, but I don't want to do anything that has me buying a subscription or anything like that, and I am not sure if the newer versions of TechStream force you to do so (research on my end is needed). Anyways, heres some pictures I took of me TechStreaming for your enjoyment!

Old School looking TechStream intro page:
    IMG_0473.jpg

My version doesn't go past 2013... but I figured how much has the 4R changed anyways. I selected 2013 as my model year, and it appeared to let me do everything, and recognized all of the modules:
    IMG_0474.jpg

This came up on my stereo screen right away:
    IMG_0476.jpg
Most of you wouldn't think this was cool, but I increased the volume of my turn signal noise. Now it sounds like a semi-truck when the turn signal is on CLANK CLANK CLANK. LOL
I've turned off the seatbelt reminder annoying beep in my other Toyotas and will probably do it on my 4R eventually. But the option to do so is on the same screen.

    IMG_0472.jpg

Adjusted the rear wiper interval speed to 5 seconds. WAY better. Wish I could turn off the 3 wipes when you initially turn the rear wiper on, but couldn't find a setting for that....
    IMG_0471.jpg

After all that, I forgot to take a picture of the screen to turn my SKS function back on after changing the beep volume. Go figure.:D If you use TechStream, its under the "smart key" menu that you can see in the picture, upper left.

What type of connection does your OBD to laptop use with that older set-up you use, got me thinking...

Its a 2-way USB to OBD2 cable. I cant even remember where I bought it... ebay? A bunch of people on another forum I belong to were buying it at the time, and I jumped on too. I think back then the software and cable was like $39. lol.

EDIT: after looking on eBay, it was kinda just like this:

I confirmed the 2024 TRD pro has the same issue. It took two days to find this thread but happy I did. I was playing with the beep volume and my key fobs stopped working. My car was shipped before christmas so I hope the new firmware will fix this. I have an appointment with the dealership in two weeks so will get it fixed at the same time

Wish I would have saw this thread prior to this morning… ‘24 ORP joining the dead fob club. Have an appointment on Friday for the dealership, said it would take an hour. We’ll see if they take the screenshots from here seriously or not.

The owner's manual needs to add a blurb in the section on how to modify the door lock beep volume:

"Upon successful completion of beep volume modification, please schedule a day off from work, due to the remotes immediately going into limp mode, which only a day-long trip to the dealer will remedy (if you can convince their service techs to take you seriously)".

Glad to have found this info. Thank you to the OP and everyone for providing your experience and solutions.

I have a 24 trd pro and experienced a similar situation with a slight twist. My puddle lights and interior lights will stop working after a few days. Starting the car or ignition on will temporarily “fix” the issue. My key fobs are functional and the proximity sensors seem to work because the car will unlock when I touch the door handle. This didn’t happen for the first month of ownership. I cant recall exactly when, but I feel like it was after I changed the beep settings. I have the old version of Carista and tried making the changes through the app, but the proximity lights eventually stop working again. I’ve also tried disconnecting the battery.

Today, I tried unplugging the connectors located at the hatch. I guess we’ll see what happens in the next few days.

Update on my trd pro 4 runner. I just brought it to the dealership and after showing them in the manual page which parameter to change they did it and fixed it. There are no firmware update to fix this so don't play with the beep volume after it s fixed and get it adjusted to the volume you like by the dealership or buy the Carista app.

I dont know if I mentioned it yet, but if you are in Michigan and need your wireless transmitter turned back on due to this bug, PM me. I live in SE Michigan but own a business in Northern Michigan so I travel a lot. If you are along my route, I will gladly bring my equipment to help someone out. Not asking for anything in return.

It is so weird that Toyo isn't addressing this with an update. It's been years. I can understand that a particular dealer may not have heard of the problem, as maybe none of their customers changed the beep volume, but the manufacturer must have a history by now. I wonder how many service tickets were put in where multiple solutions were tried, including a reset, but they just don't know which one actually fixed it.

I think I figured it out, at least for my “problem.” Turns out it may not be a “problem” after all. Using Carista, the wireless transmitter was enabled. However, I found something interesting on the Smart key setting….”Stop monitoring for car key signal after….” It’s an option to select 0-5 days. It was on the 5 day setting. Now it’s starting to make lots of sense each time I start the car, the proximity lights work. After a several days, its stops working. I changed it to stop monitoring after 1 day. Let’s see what happens.

Just went through the 2024 owner’s manual. The ”Stop monitoring for car key signal after….” feature is not mentioned on the customizable options.

For my 2024, it appears that the map, dome, and puddle lights stop turning on when the key is within proximity of the vehicle, after 5 days from the last time the car was turned on. I find it weird cuz my doors still unlock when touching the door handle. I figured the proximity sensors would completely stop functioning and require the use of the clicker to unlock/lock the car.

Very helpful thread. I've played with my door lock settings before but never adjusted the volume... Didn't realize I was so close to the fire

I want to change a couple settings but I'll hold off until Carista arrives... Seems like a useful thing to have.

Worked as advertised for me. It’s clearer and quicker to dig through the settings too.

Just wanted to say thanks all ! I got a OBD reader and Carista…. And I was able to reset it myself… as well as make some other changes. Thanks everyone for the easy fix that kept me from going back to the dealer over an hour away.

I bought a new 2024 4Runner Limited. Same issue as other have reported. Never experienced the issue when adjusting the same settings on my 2020 4Runner.

I told my service advisor about the issue when I dropped the vehicle off and showed this website and others that report the same issue. He said that he had never heard of the issue before The technician reset the remote module.

The service advisor called me to let me know the vehicle was fixed. I asked if it was a permanent fix or a patch. He said it was a permanent fix. I came down and had the service advisor try to adjust the settings to see if the same problem would occur. It did. He checked the vehicle back in and called the next day to say that it was fixed and assured me it was a permanent fix this time. I went back to the dealership, he tried to adjust the setting again, and it stopped working again.

The problem gets worse each time the remote entry is deactivated and then reactivated. The last time the service advisor changed settings on the 4Runner, adjusting one setting would activate/deactivate other settings. They took the vehicle back in. In the following days the service tech said that the radio is changing configurations in the ECU that it should not be able to do, and the system is acting unpredictably. They talked with Toyota and Toyota sent a new Radio. The radio didn't fix the issue, so Toyota sent a new ECU. Changing the ECU didn't fix the issue. Now Toyota has had my new 4Runner for over a month and they can't fix it.

The 4Runner is a brand new vehicle, and expensive for me. It is the second new car I have ever bought (the last was a budget model Focus), and was a present for my wife. The problem needs to be fixed under warranty before I take the vehicle back. Because the vehicle is new, if Toyota cannot fix warranty issues in a month of business days in my state, the states Lemon Law takes effect.

It is ridiculous that this problem has been happening since at least the 2021 year models and is still happening on the 2024 year models.

I think it is time that everyone experiencing the issue report it to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is becoming clear that Toyota knows there is a warranty/recall issue, but are not generating any Technical Service Bulletins to limit their liability. If you file a report, maybe in 5-10 years when Toyota admits there is a problem you will be able to get it fixed under a recall.

Hi all, this is absolutely crazy that Toyota hasn't fixed this issue yet. I purchased my brand new 2024 4runner exactly one month ago and today decided to adjust some lock settings and, POOF! No more lock/unlock function on my key fob. Come on @Toyota, you had how many years to fix this!

100%. I have made a claim. Just bought a 24 4runner and I ran into this this problem. My brother is a Toyota MDT and was able to diagnosis this issue and resolve it for me so it wasn't much of an issue. But for most folks, they would have to take time out of their day to have a dealership fix this is unacceptable. This seems like a simple software update would resolve the problem. Hopefully Toyota resolves this.

Hello guys. I am having issues with our 2021 TRD off. Dashboard saying, Smart Key System Malfunction

Not sure if this is the same case. But we tried everything from the manual, the car actually turns over healthy. Batteries have been swapped from keys and th3 vehicle itself. But had no luck. 4runner has been towed to a dealership. But no words till next week

Same issue here in Canada. Bought a used 2021 TRD Offroad Venture a week ago from a local Toyota dealer. Went into vehicle settings and changed the door lock beeper volume. Oups! Key fob buttons don’t work anymore! Went back to the dealer on Friday, tech supervisor immediately implied that I must’ve done « something wrong ». Said they’ve never seen this before. ‍ They looked for an hour, couldn’t find the cause, opened a ticket to Toyota Services. I did some research over the weekend, found this thread (thank you all for your essential contributions !!) and will go back today to show them. Stay tuned!

    *** UPDATE ***
Dealer was skeptical of « The Internet » but finally agreed to try it out. Took 10 minutes, problem solved. We tried modifying the beeper and lock parameters through the car console and the fobs kept working.

I’m curious if anyone out there has solved this problem on their own using Carista instead of going to the dealer?

This really isn't something that is NHTSA recall eligible. It's not a critical safety thing. Your door locks don't work. It's a warranty, or TSB, or goodwill thing through the manufacturer, but it wouldn't rise to the level of a recall. Reporting it to the NHTSA is wasting your time and diluting important safety issue reports that others may be submitting.

First time poster here on the forum but also joined the busted keyfob club after changing the audible beep volume with locks. After doing some searching online this came up and I’m shocked how long it has been going on.

With that said, Carista worked like a champ! Fixed the issue, and allowed me to change a few other options that were nice to have. Just doing the 1month free trial then cancelling the subscription. Definitely a better idea as opposed to going to the dealer.
