    Good morning y'all!

So I'm thinking about swapping out stock exhaust for an aftermarket one. I did some research but could not tell exactly the cons of them as if It will damage the engine or If I need to switch out anything such as high flow air filter to accommodate the set up. Please advise if y'all have ideas or experiences with these mods. Thanks!!

Being completely frank, exhausts on 4Runners are kinda lame and pointless, the V6 will never sound good, and instead is just shades of premium mediocre to awful.

Having said that I have a custom Magnaflow exhaust that I find acceptable, but still very pointless.

You don't need any supporting mods to add an exhaust, and it will not damage anything but your wallet, and ego when a nice rumbling V8 pulls up next to you at the grocery store.

I mainly want to get a high clearance exhaust, not for the sound to be honest cuz I dont want to get droned on the road trip. I'm thinking about chopping the oem exhaust, but it's gonna look ugly lol

I think a handful of folks have chopped their stock exhaust. High clearance is probably the best reason to go with an aftermarket exhaust. But, I think chopping the stock exhaust is the most practical way to get that result.

I put a Gibson exhaust on my previous V8 4Runner. I hated driving it after that. I would be very careful about finding an aftermarket exhaust that is known for not having a drone. I believe magnaflow or maybe another manufacturer has an "overland" exhaust that is not supposed to drone.

Agree with the drone! I at first looked at where to chop the exhaust, but could not find the sweet spot I liked. Then checking all the options for aftermarket ones, I found the R4T high clearance exhaust has the most identical sound with the stock so I ordered. Some how I decided to do some research to see if it would be okay to switch out for aftermarket one, after. And here I am, still looking for the answer lmao.

Totally agree, magnaflow and CAI was horrible for I5 and the mountains. Pissed my wife off and man was she happy when I got rid of the CAI and the drone lessened to only annoying.

Another reason why I don't want it to loud cuz Ima re-gear the car soon. The drone gonna be worse. But still, I want the exhaust to sit as high as it can be flush with the bumper and for off-road.

However, If aftermarket exhaust does not harm the engine, I would keep the R4T exhaust since it saves me some weight also. Cutting down the weight is another goal. My 4runner is at 600lbs extra without the front bumper, the winch nor bigger tires. If it's fully build, it will be roughly around 900lbs over gvw. That leaves me nothing much for all the gears.

I wouldn't mess with any of the aftermarket exhaust systems. They will drone like hell and you will be annoyed and sorry that you made the change. I learned the lesson the hard way. But if you like loud noises and hearing the poor V6 under acceleration, then this is for you. There is a video out there of a guy in TN where I believe he put headers or something on the 4R and this thing sounded like a race car.....it was funny seeing the 4R take off with that sound. My 2c.

This brings back old memories when I cut back my exhaust with a Milwaukee Sawsall, headlamp in the dark in visitor parking. Ppl prolly thought I was stealing a cat.
I slapped on an MBRP tip tho
