BMC - Round or Flat?

Do you recommend the flat BMC plates or the semi-circular ones?

Which gives the best clearance and support?

Depends if you're chafing due to tire diameter or tire width/offset.

In salty regions it's better to leave it open like Jeep cab mounts to avoid trapping mud and road salt. It'll be stronger than OEM after a few winters:



Cut/grind until the tires clear. Flex it out off-road, check for chafing, grind more if needed. Once you're satisfied with the clearance, fabricate or order a plate that fits.

 

Which one for which reason?

 

^Large diameter tire - go with SDHQ type
Wide tire or very negative offset - go with the open type

You don't have to decide now. Again, just cut/grind until the tires clear. Flex it out off-road, check for chafing, grind more if needed. Once you're satisfied with the clearance, fabricate or order a plate that fits. Some people leave the chopped mount unfilled for a year before they decide it's "finalized" and weld in a filler plate.

 

I rub due to spacers if that helps on 285s

It rubs on the body mount just a smidgen about the middle of it. It’s snowing out and 11pm.

Thank you for your insight. Went with truenorthfabrication.com. They made semi-circular. NJ here so salt and snow are an issue. I'll be using Mainline 4x4 for the install and welding (not my specialty). Thanks to everyone who gave insight. Appreciate you guys.

I did the flat style, looks slick af. I rubbed the exact same way with 0 offset 285/70's on 9" wide wheels. The curved bmc looks to sometimes involve bucking off more of the OE body mount and in my opinion ultimately removing more strength than I did. Some say don't buck off any of it, in the case of motor vehicle crash safety and possible insurance hickups.
I believe body mounts are near the top of the highest strength steel on frame.

Right on! I bought the plates off some website, and cut as close to the body mount bushing I could. For my setup now I have a ton of clearance(to the body mount).

Buddy did all the painting for me, I'm pretty sure it was just rattle can but who knows. I walked over to Cabela's near his garage haha

Its really not difficult with the right tools (grinder and mig welder). It took me less then 2 hrs. Id guess a shop will change you less then $400.

 

Your buddy did a nice job! If you get a chance could you snap a picture of your BMC showing what the bottom of the BMC looks like? I'm considering doing the cutting and prep for mine. But not the welding. Thx!
