The total on this table is odd. Would be more interesting in seeing the total per year rather than per month over all years

I find it so interesting how a dinosaur of a truck has had the strongest sales since 2015 until now. I bet 2024 is gonna be another strong year, probably more than 2023. Goes to show you, people love capability, reliability, and technological simplicity without gimmicks... and also keep in mind, most 4R buyers aren't crazy car guys like us in this forum.

This is what irks me about some new cars, they think people just want these gimmicky infotainments in the name of modern tech... man their marketing teams need to GTFO with that.

The sales trend is down, I doubt 2024 will reverse that.

80% plus of the public want "gimmicky infotainments", so that's what they sell.

I mean people buy it because they have no choice and they need a cool looking vehicle. Honda reverted back to all physical buttons, so did Toyota (with the exeption of some touch functions in the new Lexus infotainment), VW announced they'll be using all physical buttons moving forward, most of Ford's lineup has physical buttons with the exception of the high trim Lightning, Mustang Mach-E, and new Mustang.

Speaking of which, I was watching the new Mustang SavageGeese video and they said Ford had a focus group which was made up of zoomers and they said they liked the all-touch infotainment and such... but Ford is on drugs. Why would they wanna listen to a bunch of kids that can barely afford their DoorDash orders working at a supermarket? The ones buying the new Mustang will be gen X's and maybe some millennials. There's no way these kids are gonna afford a Mustang... most they can afford is a 15+ years old Mustang that is falling apart.

Looks as if 2023 is missing a month (June) of sales…. Add maybe 10,000-12,000 to the yearly total?

lol of course not, hard capitalism for you and I, sweet sweet socialism for the rich.

Zoomers are special because they grew up with iPads and iPhones and the social media bombarded them with so much marketing that they aren't very smart with what they purchase. Like did you see the frenzy that happened with those pink Stanley tumblers? All because of zoomers and social media. So many of these zoomers that are Swifties spent thousands of thousands of $$$ to see her in the Eras tour. Same with Olivia Rodrigo all her fans are mostly zoomers who max out their savings for 2 hours of live entertainment :spending: . I wouldn't spend thousands of my hard earned money on these things, I'd rather spend it on a real vacation :santa2:

SOURCE: I have a zoomer sibling

2022 and 2023 4runner sales numbers would have been higher if it wasn't for the chip shortage.

There was tons of demand for 4Runners and supply was limited.

2024 will be an interesting sales year. Not sure what to make of it. Some will want to run out and get the last of the 5th gens, others will want to wait for the 6th gen.

That's why my local dealers STILL mark them up at least $6k over sticker...

Agreed, not having buttons and knobs is asinine.

They probably laid off or fired all the older, experienced people and outsourced the focus groups to some company with new grads, who wrote the questions for themselves.

Yes, Ford, lead by Jim Farley, is usually snorting something, EV plans, forcing dealers to spend millions and then canceling half of the investments, new EV models and factories, then saying, oh, consumers really want hybrids.

Several months ago, my youngest daughter was looking for a new 4Runner, preferably in Lunar Rock, trim level wasn't as important. I found that the local dealer had one that was built and on the way from Japan. I looked over the window sticker with her (it was a new '23 TRD ORP in Lunar Rock, with the XP and blackout packages), and once she decided that was the one, we put a deposit down on it. We got it at MSRP, and she got more than what she owned on her '22 Tacoma SR5 in trade, so we felt like it was a good deal. Not great, but good enough, considering just about every other dealer I looked at was marking them up anywhere from $3K - $5K minimum.

Fast forward a few months, and I'm in the market for a 4R as well. I wanted one with the redwood interior, and my first exterior color choice was Nautical Blue. White was at the bottom of the color list, because it seemed that for every 10 4Rs I saw for sale, most of them (6-7) were white or blizzard, with black / MGM / or blue making up the rest. I found a '23 MGM at a dealer who was going to cover the negative equity in my trade by lowering the price of the 4R, so that was good enough for me. The '24 Underground color would've been great with the redwood interior, but none of the dealers around me are dealing on the 24's, since they still have some '23s on the lot as well.

I told my daughter to not wait for a 6th gen and get a 5th gen, because they'll be the last of the breed. I have no interest in a 6th gen, don't want a 4R with a high-strung turbo 4 or a hybrid. The 5th gen is tried and true, and hopefully both of our 4Rs will last us a good long time...

No way! We've known for quite some time 2024 would be the absolute earliest the 6th gen would be released. Check out post number 1 in this thread.......which was started back in 2021.

    Thanks for sharing.

Years 2007-2014 make a good argument for killing the FJ Cruiser as well (just cannibalized 4R sales). Which also makes the number of different models coming out make less and less sense, if it didn't really work last time.

My take away here is that you could probably easily swap grill and bumpers, and other bodywork from a 4R onto a GX, though. Or popular aftermarket bits.

    Surely cheaper than V8 swapping a 4R.

I sure hope the 6th gen doesn't end up looking like the FJ Cruiser. That design already failed once, so I doubt it's coming back.

Something about the round headlights on the FJ spoke to me. The new LC version is probably as close as I could expect but for whatever reason doesnt check the box for me.

I do like the look of round headlights.

I like the new LC, also. But, I'm indifferent about the round headlights on it.

And I'm not a particularly big fan of round headlights especially as part of retro styling. I think once we get someone with a vehement hatred for round headlights we've got all the potential opinions covered!

If you are into retro styling, round headlights are a requirement. I personally like them on the new LC.

There's probably a dozen or so 6th gens out there right now driving around the country right under our noses with 5th gen bodies on them.

I'm not sure about that. I think the real thing is out there testing with Michigan and Texas plates. One of these forums mentioned here that the next gen was here in the States, in early 2021. Matches up with inside reports.

I'm thinking from what you and the other insiders shared over time, the 6G probably was brought over in early 2021. Probably possible, because the midsize GA-F trucks were all designed until about sometime in 2020. Leaves time to build prototypes right? Usually I hear it takes 6-9 months to hand build first prototypes of the final design for testing.

In fact, our very own forum might've broken info on the first testers in USA per these posts I'm gonna link to:

@4Runner170V, you (nimby), and @TexasFunRunner (hopefully not forgetting anyone) are the real MVPs on this forum.

That info matches what a lot of insiders were saying. The 6th gen was developed as a 2022/23 model from the onset (according to A70 back in spring 2019 on MKV Supra forum) and CM1/AM1 (many forums), so it makes a lot of sense how they were already testing back then in full guise.

It's just been delayed so many times, which as you know is typical of Toyota in the TNGA era. Missing deadlines very often.

Another dude mentioned he tested it off-grid at a rural property somewhere on assignment, but can't find the post. It's also from 2021 I think.

I bet 4R170's insider saw some even built strictly for internal marketing purposes and shown off to need to know staff bodies, maybe doing early consumer research?
