I've done it in a stock 4R a couple of times, no issues. Didn't rub underneath, or need rock rails. Good tires are a plus.

Being in North Carolina and not going to have the opportunity to head West, I appreciate the ability to live vicariously through your pics.

I've been very fortunate to have traveled quite a few places from Texas, including Canada. I've also visited NC, have you driven Hurricane Creek to Max Patch? Looks like nearby Nemo Tunnel has since closed.

Several vehicles, including 4R have flipped on BBP. It is not a very difficult trail. There is one semi steep section at the top of the stairs. I would not recommend BBP as a beginner trail though, especially in a vehicle with IFS.

This one is the same spot where my first posted picture was taken.

This one is where my second/third photos were taken.

imo opinion black bear pass isn’t difficult unless you have a fear of heights. There are two sections that can put you in an awkward situation depending on line. Nice set of tires, decent weather, and good lines go a long way

The best vehicle for this pass would be a 2 door Jeep

A buddy of mine used to live out there. He told me the saying is that Black bear pass is an amateur level trail, with expert level consequences lol. On account of the height thing. One bad decision in the wrong spot, and it’s all over.

He mentioned a lot of those mistakes happen when people encounter an idiot coming up the trail on the one-way descending portion of the trail. People will move too far towards the edge to get past each other, and roll off. The switchbacks are another spot where people make mistakes that lead to roll overs.

Have yet to do BBP in the T4R, the 2 door wrangler was perfect. Beautiful sights only one pucker point on the steps. You eliminate most all three point turns on the switchbacks with the two door. Never ran into anyone going the wrong way while descending. I loved it…wife refuses to go again (of course I was driving).

Same here. Did it twice in my JK Rubicon 2 door back in 2007 ish. As yours, my wife will not go again. I don't plan to do it in my 4R either.

Yeah probably in your best interest in a high risk area like that to leave the seat belt off and door ajar or off all together like a Jeep. No sense riding it all the way down if you can feel it going over just bail. Also have the loved ones walking if someone had to go over the edge better it be you than your wife or kids.

Hmm, both of those have heavy stuff on their roof. Coincidence?

The rooftop tent for off-roading always bugs me, this is what I picture happening.

This is a bucket list trail for me. I'll take the wife shopping in Telluride afterward to calm her down xD

To be fair, that spot can be fairly tippy for an unloaded vehicle, and stabbing the brakes won't help. I've done several trails, including BBP with a RTT while still on stock suspension/tire size. I spent a solid month road tripping, camping, wheeling, moving every day. The RTT made for a quick set up/tear down. I recommend throwing all your gear on your truck and trying out a local off-road park if you're able to, before going on a big trip.

When in Tellluride visit Patty owner of Telluride Truffles, tell her ST Louis friend Jack sent you. Your wife will love it.

I have place booked in Ridgeway this July, the drive to the San Juans from Colorado Springs is just far enough away to make staying in the area necessary. We will hit all the routes we can in the week that we will be there including BBP if it's open.
