Has ordering an oil filter from Amazon changed?

Does this filter part still fit the new 4 Runner? Amazon doesn’t think so. I’m a first time 4 Runner owner who wants to start doing basic maintenance.

Buy filter from a dealer or a more reputable source.

Amazon is not the place to buy important things.

The short of it is that you can’t trust the seller or where the seller gets their stuff and even if you can and do, commingled inventory at Amazon could mean you get a counterfeit that a different seller provided since they get tossed into the same bin at the warehouse.

You could be fine enough but for the relative lack of savings why bother?

That makes a lot of sense. Thank you for your response.

Welcome. Buy your oil filter from the dealer. It's not worth the chance of getting a counterfeit to save $1-2.

No clue, as others stated, just buy filters from dealership rather than gamble.

When a new model year hits the streets it takes all the aftermarket suppliers months to update their websites to show compatibility even though nothing has changed.

Your local parts store will have a more than adequate filter. I suggest Wix.

BAM actually has a portal on Amazon. Bought two cases from them through Amazon when they had a sale @41.50 a case with free shipping.

As already stated: Buy from either dealership or WalMart. The only filter I would get from Amazon or EBay is the cabin filter and I chose EBay for that. My dealership taped a crush washer on the lid of each oil filter box also which I thought was a nice touch. I am interested to know what folks think about other lubricants (not engine oil). The CarCareNut Guy emphasized using only Toyota brand lubricants across the board for differential, transmission, etc…. I see lots of folks using Valvoline, etc.. for these lubricants. Once again, I’m not asking about engine oil because that is a dead horse. I’m just asking about the other lubricants.

I've run Mobil 1 gear oil and Valvoline gear oil 30+ years in all my Toyota 4x4's no issues ever. I have never used special Toyota branded oil in diffs or T-case.

Well this thread just changed my purchasing. I usually get oil & Filter @ Wally world. I did have the OEM filter on my Amazon list to order, but I removed it after reading these comments. I may got to the local dealer & get filter & touch up paint too. I hate these guys. Never could make any kinda deal W/Them. I had the OEM Tacoma rubber bed liner bought for me as an Xmas gift when I owned that vehicle. I gave the wrong P/N for ordering. I went to them to exchange & the parts Mgr asked If I bought the truck there? I told him no & he said I can't help you then!!! What a dick it was a Toyota mfg in original shipping pkg.

Amazon is a great place to get fake stuff for these type of items. Even if the company listed is legit it can still be a fake if they use Amazon as their warehouse. Amazon puts all part numbers together and just picks the first one in the bin for the order so the fake stuff can get mixed in with the real stuff.

Wow, I just looked this up on Amazon and it is more expensive than the dealer I purchased it from a week ago. I only paid 7.56 at the dealer counter while having my first toyota care service done.

Of course this can apply to any marketplace-type site so beware buying from non-Walmart sellers on Walmart.com but it’s more clear who you’re buying from on that site and eBay at least.

But if the dealer isn’t an easy option and I had a choice of a random seller online and something off the shelf on Walmart or Advance then I pick the latter.

I got filters from a dealer parts counter + that drain thing and drain bolt gasket for maybe $6ish? The only issue was the desk being unattended so I wandered the dealer until they came back.

People with Costco membership, note a 15% parts/service discount is available and your dealer may participate.

I didn’t know about Costco discount but I do find that if your nice the whole time your talking to them you can usually ask if there are any discounts available and 9 times out of 10 they will ring it up at a shop rate instead of retail especially if use them consistently for parts.

Toyota dealers don't do exchanges or refunds on ordered parts (i.e. parts they don't have in stock) unless the part itself is defective. This is standard across all Toyota dealers. Your local dealer's parts dept isn't being a bigger jerk than other dealers.

I should have mentioned that my local Walmart carry’s instore the A1 (Camry, Lexus ES350) filter but not the A5 for the 4 Runner. I trust wal marts instore filters but not online 3rd party sites. I just crunched the numbers for Transfer Case 2 qts Redline 75W GL-4 for $23.10 each and 5 qts Redline 75W85 GL-5 $23.53 each for a total of $163.85 Purchased direct from Redline. If I do this at 30K miles I think this is cost effective.

Well the dealership I did by the truck did do the exchange, so your theory is flawed on this particular issue. The only reason I didn't go to dealership I bought from was because it was further away & they did make a better sale/trade in.

The dealer was being extra nice. They would end up eating the cost of it unless it could be sold to another customer (though the part is probably popular enough). Don't count on it at any other dealer.
