Has anyone replaced the JBL sub with the JL 8w3v3-4 sub and kept the existing amp? Better or does it need a new amp to make a meaningful difference?

It would be better to just rip all that out.

I went with the JL 10w12 after replacing the stock head unit and that thing will melt ice!

Am planning 8W3v3-4 with JL JD250/1 amp, sounds like I should just do them together instead of waiting on the amp.

Does anyone know what size wiring is currently run to the JBL sub amp? The JD250/1 calls for 8awg w 30amp fuse, hoping to not have to run new power! Also, will the amp fit in the cutout on the factory enclosure?

Here’s the thing, you have to leave the OEM amp in place because it powers all the speakers unless you intend to run your own or bypass. So you should run separate power for the amp you want to add.

OK, thank you, that is great info. Do you know what the impedance is on the current sub and how many watts the JBL amp pushes to it?

edit: I found this on the other forum. “The sub is a 8” JBL 2ohm w dual voice coils. The amp puts out ~90amps max, est 45 watts rms” this is from 2010.

Yeah it’s been the same setup for years now and makes it a pain to upgrade. At one point I found a bypass harness for when I wanted to change it all in my 2010 Tacoma but I never did.

So if I wanted to do this in steps, and have the amp behind a panel on the sub enclosure, it sounds like I might be better off buying and installing a new multi-channel amp to replace the factory amp. I could do the JL sub at this time. I’d really like to stay away from a new head unit. Man is it hard to get better sound.
