Why I believe the 4Runner line will die in 2023.

It's because Toyota's inside marketing apparatus has been leaking tidbits for a couple of years that the new 6th gen 4runner was coming out "soon". Hint's first emerged in 2019, some assumed it would be introduced as a 2021 MY, then 2022, then 2023, then 2024, and the latest, 2025. Pick any number of excuses for the delays, some of which may have been valid, some, not so much. As evidenced by those of us here looking for the latest info, we are all simply beholding the Toyota hype machine, which is alive and well, silently in the background.

Meanwhile, the 5th gen keeps getting cranked out and sold, less than honest, hype based sales people, want to try and make the unknowing believe this is the "last year of the 4Runner", in a vain attempt to get some sales in their pocket, same story, year after year, and Toyota rakes in the profit from the old 5th gen model.

Maybe Toyota keeps threatening to update the 5th gen to get people to buy it out of FOMO. Every year seems like the last year.

I'm sure there is a replacement, and I'm sure it'll be a Tacoma with a roof instead of being its own thing like the 4th and 5th gens.

There’s a lawsuit actually along those lines targeting Dodge but it was official announcements and reversing course that’s causing trouble.

    https://www.thedrive.com/news/angry...rs-sue-dodge-for-bringing-model-back-for-2023

As for the next gen, I’m sure there will be some lead time between an unveiling and hitting lots like the new LC for those who want the LAST last year. (Toyota probably wants to straddle the line between risking Osborne-ing the current 4Runner and the ambiguity getting people buying now.)

If that means there will be a manual transmission option, I'm OK with it.

I'll make up my mind when I see one in person. Even if it is, they'll probably do a face-lift after a few years.

It will still outsell the competition, thanks to Toyota fanboys. This thing is a much better truck than Tacoma, and Rubicon means something unlike TRD Pro. But it still doesn't sell. Good for people who are not fanboys. Buddy of mine is buying one with huge discount.

I'd love that, but it wouldn't be unprecedented if it didn't happen. The 2nd gen Tacoma had the same engine and a manual trans available, but neither the 4th or 5th got it.

In fact every year starting in 2001 we've had an engine in the 4runner that had a corresponding manual transmission that wasn't available. I'm surprised I haven't seen a single person try to do this transmission swap in a 5th gen. Come on guys, you gonna get shown up by those 4th gen owners who weren't afraid to do it?

Anyways, a manual trans would be the only redeeming factor since I don't like the way the new Tacoma looks. Toyota really muddied the waters with the LC250, if they don't do something extreme to differentiate the 4runner, it'll become a poor mans LC

I was just responding to your suggestion that the 6th gen will be more closely related to the Taco than the 4th and 5th gens. I don't actually expect there to be a manual option, but I wouldn't mind if there was.

    How is it better?

It's ugly, and being a Wrangler pickup, the wind noise is surely significant. It has a little more available payload and towing capacity, but comes with FCA reliability.

if I were in the market for a mid-size pickup, it wouldn't even be on the list to look at. I would consider a Ranger, or Frontier, though.

Jeep reliability is below average and it is a serious drawback for the out of warranty ownership. Depreciation reflects that fact, making cost of ownership much higher.

If by liability you mean the reliability of the engine and transmission, then the same engine and transmission in Rams, Chrysler minivans, Grand Cherokees have made it to 400,000, 500,000, 700,000 miles. This thing is an absolute workhorse, and second to none in off-roading

    What?

I meant reliability when I said reliability.

Most mid-size pickup buyers don't give a shit about off-roading.

    And, it's still ugly.

I already said, here is one more time, you can get 700,000 miles out of an FCA product, with pretty much standard maintenance. 700,000 miles is not good enough? My last Taxi Driver at SeaTac had a Dodge Grand Caravan, with 200,000+ miles, no issues whatsoever. The problem with Toyota fanboys is that they have never tried anything else. Others make reliable vehicles too, it's not just Toyota

Your anecdotal experience has little weight. Statistics wins out. The data says Stellantis products are garbage.

I know people who are Mopar fanboys, and even they talk shit about FCA reliability. I know they make some reliable vehicles, but overall they're not as good as Toyota.

Also, don't lump me in with the so-called Toyota fanboys. If someone else was making a better 4Runner than Toyota, that's what I'd be driving.

If you think that this new Tacoma with the funny little thing under the hood that it calls an engine, is more reliable than the Gladiator, then that makes you a Toyota fanboy.

I don't believe in those statistics. Statistics also say that F-150 is better than Ram 1500, that's absolute nonsense.

1- nobody knows yet how reliable the new Tacoma will be.

2- I've never even suggested that it will be more reliable than the Gladiator.

3- if I need a midsized pickup, I'll buy the best midsized pickup for my needs.

    4- the Gladiator is ugly.

And millions like the looks of a Jeep. It is a brick with puppy eyes, I love it, people love them. I love the 4Runner too for what it is.
