If you're driving for 3 minutes next to a semi for a "pass" you A. Drive like and idiot and don't know how unsafe you are actually being B. Deserve to be pit maneuvered.

I’m like you on the speed, except I do speed up a little more when passing a semi just to get the pass over with. But I will not accommodate the jerk riding my butt by hurrying up to get out of his way. It seems those guys haven’t yet learned the ‘other cars are traffic, too’ lesson. I had one guy pass me and the other lane on the RIGHT berm last week (I was returning to the right lane after passing a car). I would guess he was doing between 85-90.

So when an 18 Wheeler pulls into the left lane and it takes 5 minutes to pass another 18 Wheeler does that create a dangerous situation? Or is it just me essentially driving the speed limit that gets you all upset?

Why is it dangerous for me to pass at 5 mph over? I can see him, he can see me, if he looks in his mirrors. He knows I'm there.

You think I deserve to be wrecked because you are too inane, immature and selfish to drive the speed limit?

If you had the intelligence you'd be ashamed of yourself...

Tank, if the speed limit is 80 I'll be driving 80. IF IT IS SAFE TO DO SO.

But what gives you and idiots like you the right to endanger me or anyone else because you are either too selfish or too stupid to obey the lawful speed limit?

Grow up child, the world doesn't revolve around you.

Almost nobody obeys the speed limit, anywhere I've driven. 5-10 over is pretty typical on any highway.

I have no problem giving someone a minute to pass safely. But, passing vehicles should be willing to give it a little extra gas to get clear so others can pass them.

Thanks for reminding me why I hate people.

ME ME ME ME ME ME, oh wait there is others in this world.

there was a time when I pushed every vehicle to the max, felt that 1 more minute at my destination was priceless, then I grew up. Things really set in when my kids started driving, and what I had taught them was safe operation, really added to the danger of them being on the road.

all this complaining about folks not going fast enough or you should get off the highway because you are not blasting the speed limit is crap, you know they have minimum speeds on highways, in Maine they used to be 20 under the speed LIMIT.

I am not aware of this but if the guy entered the intersection properly, there is no way the other person should be able to enter that intersection until it was clear. Those lights must have not been calibrated properly.
And yes, I agree don’t hang out on the side of a semi, but that tire could also blow as you try to fly by and thus cause more problems.

I don't care how slow people go in the right lane.

But, the left lane is for passing.

Just because you're not in a hurry, doesn't mean other people aren't. The freeway is for transportation, not sightseeing.

I think it's 45 or so in Wisconsin, depending on the highway. But, honestly, if people aren't in a hurry, they are better off taking the scenic route.

Whenever I'm not in a hurry, I avoid the freeway and take 55 mph highways and enjoy the ride. It's more enjoyable for me, and I'm not getting in the way on the freeway.

Agreed! Tailgating in the right lane is the same as camping in the left lane. Both are asshole moves.

In Montana we had no speed limit for a short time and that lasted about mmmm not long.
A recent article from July this year states,
There's no way to know for certain, but what we do know is that Montana continues to see above average traffic fatalities when compared to the rest of the country. In fact, some of the highest rates among any state, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety.

Traffic accidents being the second leading cause of death for children in the US I’d say way to many distracted drivers on there phones going to fast at 80 MPH, or faster.
My son worked as a EMT and has seen plenty vehicle fatalities here.
I know for myself I’d feel pretty guilty if I killed somebody because I felt like I needed to put pedal to the metal.
usually some dude will pass me and I’ll see his sorry ass at the stop light. Lol all that fast driving to see you at the light broski.
    cheers

oh and when you’re doing the 90-100mph out in the middle of nowhere at night or possibly during the day and hit some wildlife roll your car, are ejected and rolled on. Help will be there soon.

We've visited Montana a bunch of times, and almost moved there years ago. Our favorite state.

I remember one time driving through Miles City, and as we did so, I was going maybe 65-70 in a 55. Anyway, got pulled over by the nicest cop. He chatted with us, asked where we were headed, etc. Then he said, "That'll be $5". He explained that the ticket was for 'wasting natural resources' and not a speeding ticket. Wouldn't go on my record. Apparently, in order to keep federal funding during those idiotic 55mph times, they had to issue tickets of some sort. So they did it this way so as not to discourage drivers from going more reasonable speeds. I think I still have that ticket.

I'm sure I have a pic of one of those speed limit signs. Roughly, it said something like "Reasonable and prudent" for daytime speeds, and I think 75 at night.

I agree with what you saying, it’s the folks who believe the own the road and you better get out of my way. If I’m doing 1 mph more than the vehicle I’m passing, I guess folks will have to wait, it’s not ok for folks to think others need to get out of their way. Oh and all roads are for transportation, except at parks and what not.

In MA you'll be pulled over for "impeding the flow of traffic" if you take 3 minutes to pass someone and clog up the left lane.

If you're only going 1 mph faster than the vehicle you're passing, you don't need to pass. Slow down 1 mph, stay behind the other vehicle and let traffic flow.

So when I am passing someone in the left lane I am moving faster that the vehicle I'm passing.

Therefore, I am obeying the law and legitimately using the left lane.

I am not aware of any state law that says I must pass within a certain time so that nobody behind me gets their panties in a knot.

Failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency for me.

Gonna be late because someone is making a legal pass in front of you? Easy solution, but hard for a certain group of people to figure out.

Here's a hint: Leave home earlier...

Same. I moved from a stressful state to a more calm, slower paced one and I really enjoy driving the speed limit-most here do-instead of being tailgated when I am doing 85 in a 65 zone.

Sometimes it's not about being late for work. Sometimes you're trying to drive several hundred miles, and it gets irritating when people are clogging up the passing lane.

If you're not in a hurry, don't pass. Stay in the right lane and go whatever speed that lane is moving. Or, get in the left lane, give it a little extra gas, and get out of the way.

Interesting. This thread went from what mpg do you get @ 90mph to a what speed do you pass a semi pissing match.

Gotta love 4runners.com. Sometimes ventures into T4R.org territory.

Somebody making a pass on the interstate that takes three minutes to complete is effectively blocking that lane for a distance of 3.5 to 4 miles.

If we think about that fact on it’s own (without worrying about the behavior of other drivers behind), it doesn’t sound prudent to be using a passing lane for that long. Doesn’t sound necessary either. A semi truck driver probably doesn’t appreciate someone unnecessarily hanging out next to them for minutes at a time.

It completely possible to be obeying the law with one aspect of behavior, while simultaneously breaking the law with regard to a different behavior. For example, tailgaters are breaking the law even if they are going the speed limit.

What’s interesting about that sign is that “reasonable and prudent” is actually a speed limit. If somebody loses control on a road with that sign, they by definition are breaking the law because the speed was obviously not reasonable or prudent.

Interstate speed limits nowadays, for the most part, are pretty reasonable in terms of defining reasonable and prudent maximum speeds for passenger cars in good repair, given the type of road/terrain being crossed.
