I am about to pick up a new 2024 4Runner Limited. My goal for this car is to do 100% on-pavement driving (don't shoot, off-roading not my thing) for as many years and miles as possible. I have a short commute but live fairly up north and have to frequently deal with bad weather (lots of snow). I am moderately knowledgeable about everything automotive, I understand the need for an early engine oil change and regular maintenance. I do not plan to follow recommended oil change intervals, instead doing it every 5000km or 6mo. Depending on how accessible is the filter and the drain plug (I don't think Limited comes with shields), I will likely do the oil changes myself.

    Questions:

    1. Is there carbon buildup issue with these V6 engines? As far as I can find online, no. Please confirm.
    2. Is there anything I can do to postpone X-Reas suspension failure? I would have purchased different trim to avoid it, but wanted AWD and not 4WD.
    3. Is frame rail rust solved in 2024? I plan to do yearly oil spray, do I need to do more? They salt roads where I live.
    4. Limited has ridiculously large stock rims, are there any fitment issues on Limited to swap regular rims (caliper, offset, etc.)? I like comfortable ride. Also, would having smaller rims with larger tires make the car wander or vibrate more on the highway (driving normal speeds) ?
    5. Winter tire recommendations. I am big fan of Michelin but they don't seems to make X-Ice in 4Runner rim size (no idea why). What people use here?
    6. Is there anything dealer PDI can miss that I ought to check on (chassis plugs, etc..)?

Any other recommendations are welcome, especially if there are timebombs I have to be aware of.

    Thank you.

    1. No
    2. Just keep the undercarriage clean and look into a coating if salt is used in your area.
    3. No.
    4. 17s or larger to clear the brakes. A limited is basically the same as all the other Runner options.
    5. Not sure myself.
    6. Not that I know of.

    NO.

    2. Is there anything I can do to postpone X-Reas suspension failure? I would have purchased different trim to avoid it, but wanted AWD and not 4WD.

NO. Just drive it until it dies, then replace with Bilstein. You'll find lots of other threads on this here. BTW, it is Full-Time 4WD, not AWD. Other threads here can explain the difference.

    3. Is frame rail rust solved in 2024? I plan to do yearly oil spray, do I need to do more? They salt roads where I live.

The frame is the same on your 24 as was on the earlier Gen5's. It'll still rust. Some of us living up north do undercoats.

    4. Limited has ridiculously large stock rims, are there any fitment issues on Limited to swap regular rims (caliper, offset, etc.)? I like comfortable ride. Also, would having smaller rims with larger tires make the car wander or vibrate more on the highway (driving normal speeds) ?

So long as the tire diameter is the same as with the smaller rims, they'll adapt. The rotor bolts on the Limited are the same as the other 4Runners. Everything is compatible. But before you ditch the stock rims, I'd suggest you drive it a while. We eventually adapted to the feel of ours on our 22 Limited. We also have a 21 Venture with 17" TRD wheels.

    5. Winter tire recommendations. I am big fan of Michelin but they don't seems to make X-Ice in 4Runner rim size (no idea why). What people use here?

We're in the south - I'll let others weigh in here.

    6. Is there anything dealer PDI can miss that I ought to check on (chassis plugs, etc..)?
Always check everything in any PDI. Make sure you have all of your glovebox materials / papers. Since PDI is dealer-specific it can vary. Run through all transmission modes to make sure everything shifts smoothly.

Any other recommendations are welcome, especially if there are timebombs I have to be aware of.

One of the beauties of the Gen5 is that it has fewer hidden bad items than just about anything else. The one thing that you'll notice immediately is that the 360 camera is terrible. That's normal and there's a not fix for the ridiculously low and grainy resolution. It's usable, but just not up to the standards of the rest of the truck. Just mentioning this so you don't waste your time taking it to service to have it looked at.

    Congratulations and welcome aboard!

Welcome to the forum, Second to going over the PDI, if possible, as those are occasionally glossed over by the Dealership.

I plan getting a different set of rims and snow tires dedicated to winter driving. I find it works better long-term, as you minimize chance of rim edge corrosion resulting in slow air leaks. Which are so annoying and $$$ when that happens.

Forgot one more question. To ensure that my new 4Runner's keys do not get cloned I plan to put OSB port block. However, one I found on Amazon seems to be unreasonably high priced. Anyone has any recommendations?

Great Idea here! You probably got the Yoko Geolanders and they're great pavement tires. We're north of 40k on ours - mostly highway used for our business and the muddy unpaved roads near our house. Keep those for warm weather. They're smooth and quiet and balance to perfection - zero vibration. Get some winter tires and wheels for late October to April. Only thing that'll cost you in the long run is the winter wheels since you'll be running 2 sets of tires, you'll go twice as many miles before replacing any tires.

At our shop, the techs pops a fuse in and fill out the paperwork…

And you’re lucky if they decide to set the tire pressure….

I would do my own PDI (POST Delivery Inspection)

Can you post a copy of 4Runner PDI checklist?
