A chair didn't do all that damage.

You sure you didn't buy a salvaged vehicle and trying to get it to run or something? Thats a lot of damage for a new vehicle. Why not go through insurance?

If you are able to start it briefly and it doesn't run rough getting ignition/timing sensor codes i would guess either your crankshaft or camshaft position sensor is damaged/not wired up correctly. The other thing would be timing chain not lined up correctly.

Ok this is starting to make more sense lol. Here I was thinking a 4runner got destroyed immediately after hitting a lawn chair. But it seems like the 4runner has had a pretty rough life. I wouldn’t think rolling it would be related to your lawn chair engine failure, but it all depends on the details of it’s history and previous adventures.

Regardless, good on you for getting your hands dirty. Just know that rushing headlong into engine work without lots of research will not save you any time, it will do the opposite. Slow your roll (no pun intended lol).

I’ve found this place to be really helpful, but much of that depends on how much of the necessary info you share when asking questions.

Thanks for you're reply. I did a great deal of research on you tube watching many videos of mechanics dismantling this engine. I broke down and rebuilt a range rover engine about 6 yrs ago. It was a 98 p38 with a 4.0 V8. It did not have overhead cams it was similar to a Ford or Chevy from back in the day. It didn't have a great deal of the electronic stuff that this Toyota has boy have things changed in 20years. I'm confident that the timing chain is correct all the colored links lined up and I used a dial indicator on cylinder #1 I can tell you though that Toyota changes timing marks a lot. On the 1GR it's single dots in bank one and two dots on bank two. Makes sense right. Well on the2GR. 3.5 liter it's got on bank two a double fit on the outside phaser but a wide arrow on the inside one. Also on older models just prior to 2020 the cams have only one phaser in each side but a regular sprocket on the outsides. Alo. They use one timing mark dot on bank one. But a double fit on the same bank. It's crazy. But. I'm sure mine are right. I even marked red nail polish in the links and teeth before I disassembled every thing

I rolled it a year after I got it. I got it in Jan 2920 with only 5000miles in a trade for a lot i owned plus I gave the guy a pretty good Subaru. I didn't have full coverage insurance. I wish the hell I did. I was pissed. I had a guy at a body shop in Bakersfield who told me I could insure it wait a couple months then say I rolled it so he could repair it. With my luck. I'd get caught. I don't want to go to prison for insurance fraud. It would have been nice though to get it fixed up

I'm not stranger to rolling. The worst was in 1990 I was 25 yrs old. I bought a new srs extra cab from Toyota of riverside. In a Sunday and the asked me if I had insurance on my current vehicle. I did they said it should cover me for the first 30 days but I should get a full policy in the new truck before then. Well I didn't. And about 6weekd after I got it. I made the mistake of walking out of a sports bar in Marino valley drunk. At night then drove 70 mph down a road in the back side of march air force base. I went back two days later after I got out of the hospital to see what I did. There is a 15 mph. Left turn I never saw. I went into a drainage Culver and came up end over end for about 100 yards. I remember crawling to the street before blacking out next thing I knew I was in an ambulance. Toyota dealership told me I have to make payments. But an attorney told me. That the dealership should have made a temporary policy for the truck until I got my own. Toyota motor corp finally are it. I felt bad about the whole thing I was lucky I lived I wish I still had a pick of the weekend truck. It was bad. The frame was bent so bad and people who saw it said they could not believe I lived. I got a DUI and I don't drink and drive after that it was a big mistake I'll try to find the negative of the photo I'd like to see that pic of the truck again to remind me to never drink and drive
