What mpg do you stocks get at 90 mph?

I consistently go 80+ on the freeway, faster on long trips like BallSac to Los Angeles, and after 6 years of ownership am sitting at 14.5 mpg. I have a small roof rack, 275/70/17 A/T tires, couple hundred extra pounds due to custom bumper and gear. People say I drive really fast on the dirt, but I don't see it that way, I'm comfortable and just cruising along.

I drive fast because I'd rather be chilling at home or camp, feet up with a cold beverage in hand. I can arrive at a destination an hour earlier than many people, with multiple stops along the way to check out the sights, but with minimal additional risk. That extra hour is especially important in the winter, when daytime for explorations is limited. Also, I can't stand driving in clumps of traffic, other drivers changing lanes and hitting their brakes unexpectedly, making me react to their actions. I'd rather just hit the gas and move on past them, never have to deal with them again. Driving fast in town is generally not worth it, but there are times when I know the light patterns and so give it gas to avoid a Punishment Light (those lights that take forever).

But I'm not mad at slower drivers. Maybe you're old, or have slower reflexes and bad eyesight, or just prefer slower speeds, cool. You do you, just stay in the right lane except to pass, please? And use turnouts?

 

No point in going that fast. Few trips are more than hour or two. If you go 10% faster than the limit you save 6-12 minutes IF you are going that fast the entire time. It’ll likely be closer to 3-6 minutes in reality.

 

I'm not sure exactly where we were, or what the exact limit was. I thought it was 80 or 85. We were on our way to a smaller town outside of Austin. I can tell you that it was not backed up when we were passing through. This would have been March of 2013. We were there to play at South by Southwest and drink heavily.

 

No worries. Back then the tolls would've been new and they were all 80+ i think. Lol sxsw would've taken all worry away at any speed. Lol.

 

We had a blast until our van got broken into. Fortunately, most of our gear was safely at the house we were staying at. We still probably lost about $1K worth of stuff altogether.

It was still a lot of fun! Eating at "Salt Lick" and "Juan in a Million" were highlights

 

I know those high rpms are rough on the motor. Plus I did some dusty wheeling. Pretty horrible cold starts too. Just reached home. An oil change after a beautiful adventure, around 3000 miles.
And I don't have words to describe Death Valley. You need to visit it with your truck, and stay there for a week.

 

How often are we supposed to change tranny fluid? I am heavily modified and drive fast.

Nothing wrong with doing 90 safely. Hell even the stock tires are rated to 100+. I keep under 80 because my tires are only rated to 90.

 

The highway was flat, straight, smooth, and nobody was watching but God. I was being pretty responsible for doing just 90

 

80mph is my regular cruising speed out here in California. We routinely take road trips throughout the western states and this generally matches the flow of traffic and seems reasonable for wide-open non-crowded fair weather conditions.

In freeways through towns and smaller cities, prevailing speed (read: I always drive the prevailing speed) usually drops to 70mph or so.

Going 80mph with the family and camping gear on board I get 13mpg.

Engine, yes. Do run KO2s in stock size and a 2" lift. Often we're pulling a pop-up camper too. Wife, two kids, 90# dog, camping gear.

Just the people and no gear is probably around 16 or 17mpg.

I don't track it because honestly IDGAF.

I think Gen5 is electronically limited to 114mph. Splitting hairs, I know...

 

By the way, my 0-60 is 15 seconds I tried 3 times and each time I got around 15. I am thinking of ordering a spare tire cover that says "0-60 in 15 seconds"

 

Should be way less. ~9 seconds for me.

 

I’d do it maybe at 50-60k? It’s not towing but I say that falls under severe or whatever that modified maintenance schedule is.

Edit: That said, I would imagine as long as the gears aren’t hunting it’s easy operation so after that I’d be comfy running the fluid longer - I’m just especially particular.

 

Road & Track, Car and Driver get 7.5 I think.

 

Op. I'm curious why you post so many MPG threads?

Your rig is lifted with heavy oversized tires and a huge roof rack holding a spare. Your lucky to get 12mpg doing 65mph.

Exactly. I feel safer going 150mph on a motorcycle on the track with just a track suit than going 90 in the 4R on the highway.
If I’m doing 75 mph on the freeway with the 4R it’s pushing it to the limit of not being able to relax.
Going fast is not the issue, stopping fast is what’s important. And the 4R is not good at that, no matter who’s behind the wheel

 

It's called a "4Runner," not a "4Crawler." I guess you really wouldn't appreciate the dry lakes around here. No speed limit, but still legal to drive on.

I wish they would do this in every state. It would be so much safer if slower vehicles would just stay in the right lane.

a 4Runner will do 90 mph? Hmmm.... ok kidding. I usually run about 80 on the interstate to allow a little headroom for passing but this thing starts feeling like it might depart from controlled driving much over 90... with stock tires, I still manage 19 mpg.
