Negative, I bought a 5th gen for its reliability and simplicity. The sales manager I know did the same thing and snagged a 2023 T4R.

Maybe they are pushing the turbos pretty hard. Not sure whats the deal there.
Reminds me GR Corolla's tiny 1.6 3cyl pushing almost same a 2.5 flat4 Subaru Sti.

I’ll have to wait and see if the new engines are good. We swoon over old trucks with the 22r-te (the t stands for turbo), yet bash new vehicles for coming with a turbo.

It’s simple math that the more parts there are the more there is to fail. The 1GR is more likely to fail than a 3rz because it’s larger and more complex, yet people accept the 1GR with open arms.

It's been so long since Toyota introduced a new engine to the 4R that people forget the criticisms of the 1GR. For example it isn't rebuildable, the aluminum block means you have iron sleeves which can't be rebored like an old aluminum block. Resurfacing the heads too much can result in timing problems, you can jerry rig the engine by using a thicker head gasket but that is a much more complex job. The VVTI is more sensitive to bad oil because the it uses oil pressure to work. The newer engines (2014+) have secondary air injection, which makes changing the spark plugs a pain in the ass.

No engine is perfect, and many engines we accept today were once seen as complicated when they debuted. I wont write off the 2.4 turbo immediately, but I wont be buying it either (I'm poor).

One-at-this-price stripper. Bought new 34 yrs ago, a $13K leftover. Added Detroit TruTrac, 1”rear spring spacer and “pinstripes”… Factory AC kit and roof rack bought at dealer cost at time of purchase, still blows ice cold 32yrs later. 2022 AG ORP all stock.
    I’ve got two 4R.
Nope on the trade until I see long term results on the new ones.
