What mpg do you stocks get at 90 mph?

I'm at like 16.5-17 at 80...maybe it would have been better with the stock tires but I never drove a single mile with those so no idea.

My F150 was stable at 90-100 and limited to like 105 (which is like one step below what the stock tires were rated for). I dont think I'd be real comfortable doing that in the 4runner, maybe with a little wider track (wheel offset) and aftermarket suspension...

 

It may have been "stable" but it was completely unsafe. 200ft to stop at 70 in an F150, even more in a Raptor.

 

I think everyone is focusing on how it feels going in straight line. First unanticipated swerve or hard brake it's a very dangerous situation. Get another vehicle to go fast and appreciate the 4r for what it was built for.

I do get the regional speed differences. Wide open spaces doing 75 is the norm here.

Just did an 800 mile all interstate trip most of it 75 mph. 265 tires but lifted with roof rack and armor was happy to get 16 mpg.

 

There is only one highway that allows you to go 85MPG (Legally). There are many that allow you to go 70MPH, but the majority are set to 65MPH.

 

I knew this thread would lead to the usual arguments about how fast one should go in a 4Runner.

They're surprisingly comfortable at 90. It's just a matter of looking ahead and keeping a good distance between you and the cars around you. If you're going that fast and not paying attention, then you're definitely pushing it.

Of course going slower is safer. But, if you can't drive fast enough to keep up with traffic, you shouldn't be on the freeway. Or, at the very least, stay in the right lane.

 

I was going to make essentially the same comment about my S5. I'll cruise at 90+ all day in that. Not so much in the 4R.

 

Texas is the only place I've ever driven where I wasn't comfortable doing the speed limit. I drove down there in a Ford van loaded with music gear and 4 guys, and that thing was no fun above 80-ish.

My 4Runner feels fine at 90 mph, the only noticeable thing being tire noise. My 2010 doesn't have a mpg display as far as I know, haven't jerked around with the tiny LCD displays. RPMs are high though. The 4Runner could really use a 6th gear at 90 mph.

Christ, all these posted responses and not one person answers the question as asked, lol. Prior to major mods (although I did have a lift by that point, and 265/70 Toyo AT3s), I did do a speed approaching 90mph, and I could tell it didn’t like it. Sustained consumption was about 14L/100kms (16.8 mpg) until I hit a head wind cresting a mild hill, and that shut me down pretty good as the tranny downshifted. I started approaching 17.5L/100kms (13.4 mpg).

Now with all the mods (285/70s C load, roof rack, front bumper/winch, full skid plates), I’m forced to limit speed to 100-110 kph and can get about 13.5-14.5L/100kms.

 

Yeah, I don’t think any of us has driven our 4R at 90 long enough to get a meaningful mpg measurement. I can tell you I’m around 22mpg at about 70.

 

Haha, I don't think I've ever had mine up to 90 in the five years I've owned it. Maybe 85 when being frustrated and passing a bunch of people.

Speed limits are low here, 70mph is typical cruising speed.

 

My 82 year old buddy Bob says he never buys green bananas. That's critical thinking for sure.

 

I have a place up north we frequently travel to on weekends and it’s about 120 miles away. I have a roof rack and get low 14 to high 15mpg sometimes low 16 mpg at those sustained speeds.

 

70ish in a 65 for me. I don't have copium waiting for me at home.

 

I'm guessing you haven't spent a lot of time on these NY/NJ roads. While there is often traffic which precludes being able to go fast, when traffic is moving, it's often in the 70-90 mph range on all the roads you mention and most other highways in the area. I am on these roads regularly going 70-80 and that generally means the right or middle lane if traffic is free flowing, and never being bothered by any LEOs. Commuting traffic only keeps the roads slow at certain times, the rest of the day speeds are much higher and it's the 90+ speeders weaving through traffic that the cops are generally going after.

 

It sounds like NJ is one of the worst places to get caught speeding, according to articles on the internet. But, maybe it's like Illinois where the laws are strict, but not enforced.

 

What's interesting to note is if anyone really wanted to know what "mpg" they are getting at 90mph, they'd really need to drive it every day, for 95% of the drive, fill up to fill up, at 90 mph. What's really being asked is what "mpg" is being displayed on your dash @ 90 mph, which is just a computer algorithm based on what's going on at the time. Not the same as real mpg. Though some will swear by it.

 

What about accident avoidance at 90mph in a softly sprung top heavy vehicle?

 

We literally only have 1 toll road that's 85, on the far east side of Austin, and it's so packed good luck doing 20. Lol. Everywhere else is 75 to 80 on tolls and 65 to 70. Lol. You'll get great mpgs here, idling along.

If you were on I35, we'll that sucks in any state.

 

MA to ME in the S6 I can easily do that (but don't). 700hp, ceramic brakes, hardwire radar detector with front and rear laser shifters. Cruising the Pike to Western RI I got behind a trooper and we cruised 90 until the state line

 

What have you added for 700hp? I thought they were under 500 hp even if twin turbo V8.

 

I've done the same literally dozens of times, probably 75% of my trips on I95 average right around there. Why do you think that's such an accomplishment?

And doing 100+ is not much worse. But doing 55 mph you will likely get 20mpg +

The key is comfort and safety when driving at speed. ~75-80mph is about the sweet spot for me in a 4Runner highway. Get ~18mpg

 

Not 90... but...
Last weekend, Tucson to Ontario (outskirts of LA) in a bone stock 22 on I10.
1000 miles at 75-85; 75 in towns (maybe 10% of the distance in Phoenix and Riverside areas) and 85 in the wide-open spaces; about 10% of traffic going faster. 18.4 MPG going, 18.1 return with a slight headwind.
I second the radar-based cruise control comments. A car pulls out to pass a quarter mile in front of me and the radar "assist" kicks in to slow me down fast enough to spill my coffee. Gr.....

 

Having grown up/lived in Florida for a number of years, I picked up on your comment. We never called it I-95 though. We always called it "Cocaine Lane", because of all the drug trafficking that went on, on that highway.

I bet they've seized about a million tons of drugs just from stopping vehicles on that road.

 

Haven't cruised at 90 but would probably expect somewhere around 16-17 MPG. So far relaxed-to-typical 70-75 MPH has ranged from 22 to 18 MPG (calculated) but also subject to terrain.

For a fun reference, my 2016 Sorento with the pokey 4-cylinder saw a peak of 30 MPG on the dot cruising around 50 MPH (leaving OBX), around 24-25 MPG at 70-75 MPH, around 21-22 MPG at 80 MPH, and the worst yet (not counting city or off-pavement driving) was maybe 18-19ish MPG north of LA around 90 plus those elevation changes. (rated 21/26 cty/hwy)

 

If I drive 85, I get like 12mpg when it is cold. With a roof rack, Falken's in load range C 275/70, and skid plates. But I would rather go 75
