I need to replace the 4WD actuator and replace the fluid in both differentials. I've been looking for a factory service manual or youtube video covering these procedures but haven't had any luck. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I think most folks use 75W-90 for their differentials despite the spec being 75W-85(?) or something harder to find.

Replacing the actuator requires splitting the transfer case open, based on everything I’ve researched. I’ve read about some taking shortcuts and basically shoving the actuator rods inside blindly, but that doesn’t seem to always work right, which requires you to do the job again.

There is a “ad-farm” type website with many factory service procedures for 4runners. It seems to be an earlier 5th gen service manual made up of downloaded sections of the subscription based techstream service manuals. I haven’t found out what year 4runner it’s for, but it’s for a manual shift transfer case 4runner. It also seems to lack a lot of information, so I would not use it to do a complicated job.

However, it might give you an idea of what’s involved with splitting the case. I recommend using an ad-blocker when using the website, because the ads are made to look like part of the manual.

Otherwise, you can buy a subscription to the service manuals from toyota for a few days for about 40 bucks, last time I bought access. You’ld need to spend some time reading and downloading all the relevant sections you will need for the job, which sucks because it’s fairly time consuming. Not all the info is in one place, as each step often references other links in the manual…all necessary to accomplish any particular step. Lots of clicking around, total pain in the ass.

This is one of the advantages of the manually controlled transfer case. I haven’t heard of those having issues unlike the servo operated transfer in my current SR5. That’s why I exercise it on a regular basis, both 4H and 4L.

I am in a similar situation with the wife’s Sequoia because she rarely use’s it. My service advisor said to do it right, the transfer case must be split open to replace servo actuator.
