Hey...I need to replace my tires on a stock 2021 Venture and looking for recommendations. I do a little light off roading and am up in the snow fairly frequently. But I also log a lot of miles on the highway driving back and forth from SF Bay to Yosemite.

I was thinking either the BF Goodrich All Terrain K/O2 or the Nitto Ridge Grappler.

Also would 285/70R17 fit on my wheels with everything else stock?

    Thanks!
    Brian

Same model here. Replaced with stock size Falken Wildpeak AT3. Love them.

The ko2 is a great tire but not the best choice for a mostly highway driven vehicle, IMO.

Ridge grapplers suck after having them on 2 vehicles compared to other tires I’ve had.

I have toyo at/3’s and they been phenomenal on road and off.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

285/70 R17's would fit, but you may have some rubbing.

I changed mine out for Falken Wildpeaks, but I stayed with the stock size. For what you do (light offroading and need snow traction), these should be a great fit for you:

Ko2 on my venture. Not perfect but good tradeoff for me on and off road. I think the Toyo AT3 is slightly smoother on road.

I went KO2's on my 21 Venture. I stayed with the stock size. I have them on my Land Cruiser also. There are several great choices as the guys above talked about, but that's what I did - no regrets. Did a 1-inch lift (Cornfed Suspension LLC) at the same time just to level it out.

    This^ snow rated

I run Nitto RG’s and they are a great tire for desert off-road, but not the best choice for snow or wet conditions.

I have the Nitto Ridge Grapplers in stock size. I don’t have any information on off-road yet but I’ve driven them about 3000 miles on the highway and I’ve had no issue with dry pavement or in rain. They are not very loud for an all-terrain and they tracked well. Honestly my last off-road vehicle was a 1979 CJ7 with 33” super swampers that I owned in 1993. The 4runner and the Ridge grapplers are much nicer lol.

I will go against the grain and say you should get something more in the direction of highway that all terrain. There is a pretty big difference in how an AT tire feels on the pavement vs a decent radial.

    Hey OP,
Mickey Thompson tires are a sleeper,
    Quietly gaining rave reviews.
If you have the budget, they're a premium tire.

    Also highly recommend General Grabbers.
    And MICHELIN DEFENDERS!

    I don't recommend KO2's.
And I'm not on the overly popular Wildpeak train :p

I have Falken Wildpeak 275/70R17 and they rubbed at full lock on stock suspension. Wildpeak 285/70r17 are .5" wider and .8" taller than wildpeak 275/70r17, they WILL rub.

I have heard good things about the Yokohama G015. More street oriented A/T tire. You just gotta decide what you can live with. For street tires, I really like the Firestone Destination LE series. My 4runner currently has Falken Wildpeaks in 275/70r17, 6 ply. Good as far as A/T tires go of course.

275/70 will rub a little, but if you push the caster to 3.5 and use a heat gun to push the fender liner and cut that little part of the front bumper that pokes out, it will fit. And fit under articulation. 285/70 is overrated. Just get a 255/80r17 if you want that. Saves on weight too. You just sacrifice some ride quality since those are only 10 ply tires as far as I have seen

Given where he's driving, I'd focus on three peak mountain snowflake. While M+S rated will be good enough for him not to have to run chains in the winter, better winter traction is always good in the mountains.

Frankly, I'd say to go with AT tires. Reason being is that slightly worse on the highway is less annoying than finding that you don't have enough traction in even some relatively mild off-road or snowy situations.

Thanks for all the suggestions!!! Really appreciate it. Think I’ve narrowed it down to Toyo Open Country AT3 or BF good KO2.

Should I just flip a coin? lol

Flip away. If you’re waiting for agreement and concurrence from this forum, you’ll never get new tires.

I found that my 4Runner ownership experience is much better when I ignore the forums.
Just too many differing opinions and viewpoints to base a purchasing decision, yes that also includes me.

I purchased the K02s currently on my truck in 2006, and they have been used for about 40K miles in that time, 85% off-road on a farm in arid S Italy. From my experience the K02 stands up well to very hot and dry climates. It is a very tough tire that resists heat and wears very well. Mine have rarely been in wet weather and never in snow. Deep mud is not friendly. Road noise is minimal and if anything pleasant. I am pretty sure to put K02s on again next week. For the rigors of a hot desert climate they seem ideal. If you live in another climate, one with lots of rain and snow, there very well could be better tires. The Toyo is intriguing. Any AZ or S Cali users here?

If you do any wet weather driving, I would highly recommend the Toyo AT3’s. I’m an expert on wet weather driving, I live in Florida and the Toyo’s are excellent on road when wet.

I’ve never been to SF so not real familiar with the weather patterns there. The purpose of my post was to point out the AT3’s fantastic wet weather capabilities. OP may never venture out of his area so this may not be relevant…just mentioning a trait that I personally love about that tire.

Good Year Duratracs have been awesome for my snow and off roading, good road manners too. Some say they are noisy but most AT's are and these seem quieter than most. Maybe give the new Duratrac RT's a try, they look like a great well rounded option.

There are a ton of good choices, but I would just say that if snow performance is one of your criteria, whatever tire you get I would make sure has the three peak snow rating. You mentioned the Ridge Grappler, and that does not. I've actually heard it said that those are not that great in snow and icy conditions.

I have been very happy with my General Grabber ATX, I have stock size standard load and they are three peak rated. They're great in all weather conditions and fairly quiet, though they seem to be getting louder as they've passed the 50k mile mark. They appear to have a good amount of life left, so I cannot complain about their wear characteristics.

I might look at something milder, like the Continental AT, the Firestone Destination AT2, or the General Grabber APT. I believe all three of those tires of snow rated, and they'll all be better for pavement miles as they're not that aggressive of a tread.

Edit: I'll have the BFG Trail Terrain to that as well. It looks like a slightly mild or KO2. If I recall correctly, it did pretty well in Tire Rack's snow test. I would check those reviews out before making a choice.

I think because the Destination and Yoko are just so mild looking. Everybody wants that "tough look". I'll say though, I saw a Tacoma last week with the XTs on it, and that's a really good looking tire. It's got that heavy duty commercial terrain look to it.
