What are some annoying things about your 5th gen besides mpg?

I'm sure all of these have been mentioned but here's my personal list of "minor gripes":

-5spd instead of 6spd.
-Opposite day volume/skip song steering wheel controls.
-Halogen DRLs.
-Weak non-LED lighting on interior/license plate.
-Lack of driver side A pillar grab handle like my 3rd gen.
-Lack of manual hand brake.
-Pedal tuning.
-Non-locking fuel door.
-Need to drop heavy ass skid plate to change oil filter.
-Remote start functionality.

Otherwise loving the truck. I also know there are aftermarket "solutions" to some of these issues but that's beside the point.

 

I'm learning a lot about my truck from this thread! My current gripes:
- No 1-touch 3-blink lane changing turn signals
- Old design sun visor with flimsy narrow plastic extension instead of visor just sliding on post
- Weak-ass (literally) heated seats
- Non-functioning Homelink garage door openers

Note: my 2023 Tacoma TRD Sport has NONE of these issues listed above about the 4R - NONE of them!
BUT, the Tacoma is more cramped and feels small while the 4R seems larger in every way.
Tacoma feels tinny and cheap, while the 4R feels solid (doors, etc.)
Tacoma 3.5L V6 rattles and has weird sounds while the 4R 4.0L V6 is quiet and smooth
Tacoma drives soft, floaty and bouncy while the 4R is smooth and firm
Tacoma is long and cumbersome, while the 4R feels much more compact and agile (though heavier)

I like my Tacoma but I love the 4Runner

 

Shit man, I though I was still blissfully in love with my 4runner… But now I’m reading all of these annoyances, that I kind of agree with, and I’m wondering if I should still love it! I don’t know what to think anymore!

While many of the complaints actually don't bother me like the low tech or slow engine/gas hog, the ones that do set me off more than the average person
Reading comments and I'm like oh ya that always pisses me off, yup, that pisses me off too.
It's just like my wife, but I love them both to death at the same time

 

I’m probably going to get tan colored weathertech mats so I can see some reflected light at night. Anything to get rid of the black hole. That’s like the equivalent of slippers with calf-high socks in public. That’s how much I love my 4runner.

 

If the worst issues are sun visors, memory seats, and halogen interior lighting, I think we have it pretty good.

But I agree with @TheGreekFreak, whoever thought the stock skid plate didn't need an access door for the oil filter should not be allowed to touch another car.

It could be worse, we could be like bronco owners playing engine failure roulette daily while the NHTSA decides to give FORD a colonoscopy probe over premature engine failure...

Let's just be happy with our outdated sun visors and interior lights.

I'll take notes just in case. Please continue.

 

Oh, that's a pet peeve I can get behind: it's dark in there! The flashlight I keep stashed in the console has been used more than once to find the right button.

 

Precisely why I didn’t get a Bronco as I read about the engine failures and didn’t want to take that chance.

 

2019 Limited:
1) Not being able to read each tire's pressure.
(Toyota did the minimum to be legal. One idiot light for the entire TPMS system.)
2) Fog lights ON only with head lights.
(I've modified one of my vehicles so I could turn them on at will. Plan on doing the same with my 4R)
3) Interior lighting is lame.
(Plan on replacing all interior bulbs with LEDs, see above comment, same vehicle.)
4) Lack of data in the display, e.g. uncalibrated coolant temp gauge, no oil pressure, no voltage.
(Idiot lights in a 2019 vehicle, really? Added BlueDriver OBD2 dongle and unused cell phone to monitor
coolant temperature plus voltage and a few other parameters.)
5) Not able to open the rear hatch from inside or remotely (key fob).
6) Gas filler door is manually opened.
(Requiring it to be opened from inside is an anti-fuel theft feature.)
7) Not being able to define the use of the horn and lights while locking doors remotely.
(I prefer hearing the horn toot when the doors are locked or unlocked.)
8) No anti-theft alarm system.
9) No easy access to the oil filter.
(Plan on cutting an opening in the skid plate for access.)
10) Replaceable two-piece oil filter element.
(Really? A replaceable filter rather than a throw away screw on filter. WTF?)
11) No A-Pillar grab handle, driver's side.
(Aftermarket handle available but outside my budget.)
12) Unable to adjust High Beam bulbs.
(High beam illuminates high and not on the road surface. Great if you are looking for wildlife
in trees but otherwise useless for wildlife on the road.)
13) Side view mirrors do not show warning of a vehicle in blind spot.
(Ouch! This I really miss from my traded in 2012 Dodge Durango.)

Other 4R year models might have these "faults" covered but not in my 2019 Limited.

 

My biggest gripe after a month's ownership are the seats. The front ones. I'm a little guy at 5'6". I cannot imagine trying to get comfortable if I were taller. They truly are kid sized.

 

My only real gripe with our 2021 SR5 Premium is the automatic transmission programming when Cruise Control is engaged. If I really wanted to hold a lower gear for 5 minutes - on flat terrain - at 70 MPH, I would have installed a padlock.

 

2023 Limited. Owned it for 3 weeks. 3rd tank of gas.
1. Another 1" projection on the running boards would be great. I'll get under there to se what the possibilities are.
2. I bought the glove box organizer, and a console tray w/organizer. Helps my OCD.
3. Redwood interior doesn't have matching door panels like the beige.
4. Remote start with the FOB is short-ranged and unreliable.
5. Interior lights are weak.
6. 4WD, Blue with beige interior is nearly nonexistent.
7. I've hit the start button 4 times so far when looking for the steering wheel heat.
8. Decent highway mileage, I can average 21.5 running 72-73.
9. Ditto on the cupholder liner coming out with the cup.
10. Landing surfaces of the plastic storage areas are too smooth, too hard, and too slippery. Things slide too easy, and are noisy.

I guess some of these are likes. It is a NICE ride.

 

I have the driver's seat all the way back. I am 6'5"

When you do that, the seat clicks/pops as your weight shifts.

It drove me crazy until this forum suggested you move up the seat (as tiny as you can). Solved the clicking/popping sound but I hate that I couldn't place the seat all the way back

 

Got moonroof? one of the reasons I went without it - seems like headroom os affected. But more so for second row.

 

I have a moony and am about 6' but never noticed any headroom issue... this thread has served as a bunch of things I probably never noticed or cared about before, and now that I know of them, its going to bug me...LOL. Gee, thanks

 

Ok Ill play... The front wiper delay is backwards to my tundra, same dumb lever...Why Toyota!. It drives me nuts. Oh and the intermittent on the back window needs to have a way longer lag time. Its dumb.

 

I'll never understand why the doors can't automatically lock when you walk away.

 

I have an 2019 Off Road Premium:
1) Highway tires
2) No legit Recovery points
3) Low Beam Headlights blow
4) It’s a Premium should have a Premium sound system.
5) No driver side settings for multiple drivers. I have to re-set my seat every time after my wife drives it.
All First world problems but shoot lesser to equal value vehicles come with all these features standard.

 

You should have bought a Hyundai, I guess.

Damn, this thread has hit a nerve!! I'll just say that my '18 SR5 is the most luxurious vehicle I have ever owned. Power windows, power mirrors, power locks, heated power seats, back window goes down (powered of course), cruise control, tilt steering, factory tach. Some of you don't know the hassle of crawling across the seat to adjust the passenger mirror or roll down the hand crank window, or hold a steady speed for hours with just your foot.
Having said all that, I wish it had an ashtray and an old school, push-in/pop-out cigarette lighter. I have learned to live with a butt can and a Zippo.

Besides some of the annoyances that others have mentioned, I'll add a few of mine.

It takes quite a few miles to properly heat up the coolant enough to sufficiently defrost the inside of the windshield of condensation.
In my TJ, it takes less than a mile to be up to normal operating temp.

The rear wiper motor and arm assembly cover is obnoxiously large and does not allow the glass to self-clean at speed. My old 3rd Gen had the curved cover to deflect the air coming over the roof to help keep the wet road grime and dry weather dust from building up on the rear class.

The glare coming off the fake hood scoop and the final gear ratio in the 3rd members.

One more thing, the use of glue to set the windshield in the frame. They should have used a rubber gasket with a locking strip.

The beancounters really don't have our best interests in mind.

I wish that the LED count was more in the factory tail light. During the daylight hours, our tail lights are virtually unseen in the fog.

 

I think that you'll find that this is standard practice in virtually every vehicle with an airbag.

 

Yeah, the rear wiper is small and slow. It cleans less of the window than any rear wiper I've experienced.

 

I agree with most things on the list. While I'm listing mine, I'm keeping in mind that mine is a 2013, and a 10-year-old vehicle.

Now with what everyone else has said, there's NO WAY I could justify spending 40 to 50k on one of these new in 2023/2024.

What bugs me:

No auto headlights or real time MPG display. My 97 Grand Cherokee had these features.

The climate control is annoying, without the auto function it never seems to be at the right temperature, and the rear air vents are incredibly weak and basically useless.

The 5-speed auto was old tech even in 2013. The same year Grand Cherokee had an 8-speed transmission.

Multiple people have mentioned transmission tuning not letting the transmission stay in 5th gear while using cruise control, however I believe this is due to the engine just not making enough low-end torque. The engine should be tuned to make peak torque between 2 - 3,000 RPM, not 4000 plus RPM.

Speaking of the engine, it's just overly loud. I don't like the amount of engine noise that makes it into the cabin.

That's about it. None of them were deal-breakers when buying my 4Runner at 6 years old, however, there is no way in hell that I would pay new prices for one.

Coaxial plug for what? I don’t know of any cars with coaxial other than OEM rear entertainment systems
