Nice! I graduated in 2005. Worked for the campus PD for about 13.5 years a dispatcher. Many good memories.

Bizarre high desert clouds, and yes, it is in focus.

 

I spent nearly 30 years living in the desert. Yuma, Az. Don't get much more desert than that. We saw those kind of stratus clouds frequently. Especially during monsoon season. They tend to presage (big word for the day!) weather moving in. Not always rain, oh no.

When your annual rainfall is 3 inches a year, very seldom do you get much in the way of rain. Sometimes, in monsoon season, you get a thunderstorm, but that's about it. Frequently, you'll get your 3" annual rainfall in one thunderstorm. Usually, just high humidity. Like say 20%. In Yuma, 20% is pretty high.

As they like to brag about, 360 flying days a year. I got moved there in the Marines, worked at MCAS Yuma for several years, then at the US Customs Aerostat site for the rest. But yeah we saw those clouds once in a while. The place was a real shock for a kid that grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, living in the redwood forests that no longer exist. Between the fog and the rainfall, it was a LOT wetter than Yuma. Of course, most places are...

Fog!

 

High desert here, our house @4,900’ in Carson Valley. We are in the weather shadow of the Sierras, one of the most difficult places to forecast the weather, sometimes it makes it over the mountains sometimes it doesn’t, when it does sometimes is just goes over us, sometimes it just dumps. 8.6” average rain/yr w/15” snow. We’ve gotten 20” of rain and 34” of snow in 2023. I have seen cloud bursts with 1” rain in 20 minutes….think flash floods in the arroyos.
The humidity is in the teens with occasional single digits in the summer. Not super hot here because of the altitude, 80s and 90s in summer. Like yourself, afternoon thunderstorms in the summer. We absolutely LOVE it here.
Gliders and LOTS of balloons, balloons nearly every morning. If they land on your property they give you a bottle of champagne. We got one last year but can’t find the pics. This one landed down the street. On the other pic you can see a bunch just launching.

This by no means is a clear pic, BUT this older, closed down bridge is right behind my house, we've been moved in here for about 9 months now. I've always tried to catch a train on here, .... I'm just happy I finally caught it today,
