An invisible, solid and versatile mounting solution. The 5G 4Runner Dashtop Multi Mount (DMM)

Hello everyone, I recently designed a dash mount that I am very proud to share.
The DMM is a nearly invisible platform for attaching 1" ball mounts to your dash. The 1" balls, as you all probably know, are a very universal method for mounting basically anything, but you can't usually use them without adding some bulky in-your-face type of mount, like this...
    https://expeditionessentials.com/products/toyota-4-runner-5th-gen-powered-accessory-mount-pre-order
Now, that may be a great mount but I'm not personally a fan of how that huge thing looks on top of the dash. Nor am I a fan of the $170 price tag.
I wanted to make something that would leave the dash looking mostly stock, so after a bunch of versions of this we finally landed on something that is very solid and is basically invisible until you actually start mounting accessories to it.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
A better idea would be this: Put your phone in a place so it's not in your eye line. That way, you can concentrate 100% on the road while you're driving, and not on your phone. Whatever my phone has to tell me while I'm driving, can wait until after I'm done driving.

You might want to update the website, as this can be confusing if this is for 5th gen 4Rs:

Starts at 69.95 with 1 ball mount. Minus the discount.

Not in the market, but this seems like a quality piece of equipment, and would add a solid mounting system if needed.

That looks pretty nice. Any chance to get the sleeve just under the ball black in color? The aluminum sorta of stands out.

From the pics, looks like it mounts underneath the black middle panel on the radio trim. So the aluminum is hidden.

He's referring to the sleeve just under the ball, which is silver. Not the silver mounting plate under the plastic panel.

There's an install video on the webpage. Not too difficult, but you do have to remove the HVAC controls and the panel that holds the radio. Seems pretty straightforward. If you can turn a screwdriver, you're set.

I thought that too. They do offer what they call a 'blackout vinyl stem wrap', but I was wondering why they didn't just anodize those black also.

    Correct. Needs to be black.

But I like this. Might order one.

We have some black vinyl strips that we use for that. I’ll throw some in, just add a note to your order as a reminder.

We’re working on that. We should have some soon-ish. The reason we didn’t do it before is price. We’re not a huge shop and without volume it’s hard to justify some stuff. We will be adding the vinyl for free though. Until we get the first batch of Gen 2 ball mounts.

Watched the install video, and I'm sold for sure after seeing it.

@Lost Bolt - What about how I would route a wire for the NON-wireless apple car play / Android Auto? would love to have that done while i have the controls and head unit removed.

This looks great. Very similar to the LabOps unit, but I really like the reinforced metal below it. I experience a fair amount of 'shake' with my labops mount presumably due it just being plastic with less support.

I was thinking about this comment on my travels this last week, and I have to disagree now. When I have my maps connected to my vehicle radio screen, I have to look down more to see the screen to see my map. When using my phone, which is attached near where this mount is, I just look to the side a little, and can basically still see the road.

that being said, yes put your phone away for phone things, not map service though.

I agree. Phone away for phone things.
However, Car Play / Android Auto cripple GPS Based mapping software if you happen to be on the trail. When you are on the trail needing a working map, only a device like phone or tablet will work IMO.
Also having a solid holder for the GMRS radio seems like a big win for me.

I like it. I just pulled the trigger.

How do I get express shipping so I can be one of the first 5? <--joke

Also, can you throw in those black vinyl things? I forgot to add that to the purchase notes.

That would be correct, that's the only similar option, and I have to admit, that's a simpler install BUUUUUT.... the rigidity of the mount is not comparable, this one also has more mounting points. And I still think this looks better.
