Bought a 19 SR5 about 3 months ago with 60k miles. I haven’t done anything with it other than drive it to and from work until this past week. But today, after getting on some very muddy grass, I noticed that when the tires are spinning and the VCS light comes on, there is a ticking/knocking noise coming behind the dash or from the firewall. If I just keep hitting the throttle, the VCS light will continue to flash, the knocking sound continues and then a buzzer goes off. Any idea what this could be?

Sounds like normal operation, the ABS brake controller makes a lot of racket when it’s doing it’s thing.

If you were on dry pavement, then maybe there’s a problem.

The manual mentions noise and the light when the traction system is operating.

If you think the VSC is noisy when it activates, wait till you try the downhill assist. DHA still freaks me out when I try it, which is why I prefer 4L when descending step inclines. Having said that I think downhill assist would be safer if climbing down smooth rock found as in MOAB.

Ditto on what Slopemaster said. My Ford F150 chattered all the way down a hill made of muddy clay once. My traction control /ABS Lights were flashing and the clicking noise from the ABS was continuous but because it just couldn’t get traction in the mud. So as stated “Normal”.
