I’ve now had my 2022 SR5 Premium for over a month now.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I purchased this one as a pre-owned / certified vehicle through our local Toyota dealer.

My question pertains to the white paint- Prior to making my purchase, I’ve heard and read so many horror stories about how bad the white paint is on the 4RUNNERS.

However, when I was giving this truck the eagle eye at the dealer before deciding to purchase it, I could find nothing to be concerned about regarding the paint.

And even now, having owned it for over a month, I am unable to find anything to complain about with the paint. I am extremely happy with this entire machine.

Of course, I realize that there’s a chance that the original owner may have had paint corrections made on it previously. But if so, someone did a great job as I cannot find a thing wrong with the paint on this thing.

Has anyone else had white paint problems on their 2022 models? If so, what exactly?

I am considering having the truck professionally ceramic treated. Has anyone had that done to their white T4R? Was it worth it, or not?

Many years ago, I used to enjoy waxing my vehicles 3 or 4 times a year, but now in my old age, (60’s) the prospect of having to wax my vehicle doesn’t excite me. Lol.

Enjoy the stormtrooper look. I’m just over 5 years with mine and no complaints. It does chip easily, but so do the other colors. I installed a clear bra on the front end and that has helped, especially for highway driving.

I have the exact same year/model/color since Oct 2021. No complaints, however touch up can be your friend.

Our Super White 2021 now has 57,000 miles on it. Other than a few stone chips, the paint has been just fine - and I've detailed vehicles for over 25 years. Does it chip any faster than other Toyota paint that I've worked on? I doubt it. Will a professional ceramic coating prevent rock chips? No, but done correctly, it will add a ton of depth and gloss to your paint. And it lasts much longer than conventional wax. As evidence I offer the following pic:

Is it clearcoated? I had a white Xterra before my 4R and Nissan didn’t clear coat their white vehicles back then. Paint was awful.

The vast majority of people on this forum have determined that the clear is mixed in with the white. With all the other colors the clear coat is applied on top of the color.

Whether this is fact or fiction, I do not know.

Found this from the Lexus GX service bulletin. Looks like there is a clear coat. Screenshot_20231224_214517.jpg

The vast majority of people on this forum don't search or assume because they think rock chips are caused by bad paint and not by.....rocks.
Toyota has been applying clearcoat over white basecoat for years now. It would be stupid to continue doing the same thing after the TSB.
For 4runners, 2008 - 2015 were the years affected by the TSB.

Where are you getting the info for the 6 stage paint process?
Did you read an article about their special blue?

Also, that Lexus bulletin is talking about the same pearl white used on Toyota's. (070 paint code)

This guy is a automotive engineer and a lot of his videos talk about paint on modern vehicles.

Rocks are indeed ultimately responsible. Having previously owned a 90’s era Honda and Toyota, I noticed the Toyota paint was much thinner than my Honda and it was much more susceptible to rock chips. IMHO, paint thickness is a contributing factor.

Yeah, I read all the horror stories about the white paint before my purchase, but I still wanted white just the same due to the hot summer’s increasing interior temperature so much. So after 35 miles took it in to a highly touted shop that specializes in Xpel Paint Protection Film (clear). Had them do the front clip (windshield forward) hood, fenders, bumper, grille, door handle cups and entire roof. Also had them tint every window, including the windshield and sunroof. Rest of the paint was Ceramic coated. I figured after dropping 50K on a vehicle I should back up the investment with some paint protection.

Good plan, that’s one of the reasons I chose white too. I’ve done the touch test with my white paint compared to my dark brown vehicle in the summer sun and the difference is huge! That’s why I left my factory roof rails and caps silver. Color choice matters when you live in the desert.

I bet a good quality paint protection would not have my problem, the paint protection I had at the time of purchase of the new vehicle got relatively yellowish/ off white after 5 years.

Yes, I was a big white paint and light interior fan in the past.

Even before my white SR5 my garage was white :):)

Don't be gullible. We paint Lexus everyday. There isn't 6 stages of paint, at least in their repair procedures for their everyday colors including pearl white.

I’ve watched some videos of the painting process. Blows my mind how they’re able to do that without drip marks lol.

No one is saying Lexus is lying about their paint process. I am saying that paint process you saw does not apply to every color Lexus has. The majority of Lexus's on the road do not have special colors. Special colors are offered in the LC. Non of the GXs have special colors.

You are correct. Repair procedures are not the same as factory but it's still one paint code per color.

Im not sure if this also applies to the 4runners but I have a white Tacoma that just started to have peeling white paint on the hood and inner door. A 2022 vehicle is too new to show the white paint issue.

The white paint issues don’t start to show until years of owing the vehicle. It took 7 years for my white paint to start peeling. It sucks because you cant really do anything about it and its a common issue. I just put some touch up paint but I can tell its only going to get worse as time goes on.

This is why I avoided white on the 4runner. The color white across most car manufacturers seems to start to peel off after a couple years its not just Toyota. Tacoma white paint issue thread:https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...ailure-thread-with-toyota-corp-update.689940/

It starts to develop just like this:
