Had it since the first. Brand new (4 miles on the odometer). Since the start there has been a mildly annoying rattle coming from somewhere in the overhead console. Can't tell if it involves the mirror/camera system or the 4WD control area. On smooth roads it's a non-issue but on rougher roads I find myself cranking the tunes to keep it out of my mind. Sounds like something just needs tightening up. Bringing it to the dealer is not really an option as I bought it from FAR out of state. I could deal with it but as far as I can tell it's the only thing keeping me from calling it flawless so far. I'm not scared to disassemble and investigate but I would feel better about it if I had just a little guidance. Anyone care to chime in?

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Bro, just because you bought it out of state doesn't mean you can't take it to a local Toyota dealer. Your warranty is valid at all dealerships. You should be within the bumper-to-bumper warranty window.

    Let them handle it.

Bringing it to the "local" dealer is a huge PITA. 30 miles away. If I have to, I will. Was just wondering if anyone else had similar issues and (hopefully) a quick and easy DIY fix.

ETA: I also would like to very much limit my interactions with dealerships. In my experience, they screw up more than they fix.

You're right, fix everything on your 4Runner yourself. Why bother using that expensive and fancy warranty that came with the new vehicle?

    You got this bro!

Noticed it once in mine recently as well. Less than a month old. Same area. Happened for a few minutes on smooth stretch then haven't heard it since. Annoying. Would also like to hear if this is common and a known and easily fixable issue.

Well I went and investigated. Popped the black plastic cover for the camera or whatever off. Just took a firm push following the windshield contour. Took it for a test drive and...it's partially better. Still something sounding not quite seated properly coming from the crawl control and MTS area. Pushed around on it gently after parking and think I heard a little snap like a clip seating. I replaced the camera cover with a TINY dab of faucet grease (silicone grease) and it snapped right in to place. Done for tonight. I see two places on the 4WD control area trim that I can investigate tomorrow for possible removal points if it persists.

I wouldn't touch it myself. Call closest dealer, make appointment, have it fixed under warranty. That is what the warranty is for.

In 6 years, this is the first post I’ve seen regarding a rattle in the overhead console. Only noises I’ve personally experienced is the front inner fender rubber flaps, front windshield corner pieces and the hood latch.

Funny you posted this I have the same popping/ticking noise on mine. I was wondering if somehow the windshield was making noise.
Had it since day one with 3 miles on it.

Of course not, just haven’t seen any other similar posts.

    Best wishes with the repair.

No. It’s definitely coming from somewhere in the upper console area. I’m 53. Not a newb to cars. It’s a plastic against plastic sound.

My 22 4Runner had this issue coming from the sunroof like a buzzing noise and the noise coming behind the passanger side vent, Toyota brought out an engineer because they claimed they never saw this before and their solution was to rip apart my dash and take the headliner down and put felt tape they scratched the crap out of my dash when prying it apart. Another guy had the same issue and they put felt tape for his fix as well he said his rattles came back with a vengeance, I traded mine in before I could find out. I’m so ocd neurotic anal I could not drive a car with buzzing and rattles. Wind noise and harsh ride I can deal with all day long go figure

For big things I agree, but with things like squeaks and rattles you are honestly better off trying to tackle them yourself first if you are at all handy. I've had better luck fixing little things like that myself than having the dealer do it, not to mention the inconvenience factor of having to schedule an appointment.

In my experience, dealers can't hear rattles. I had a 2004 Tacoma DC with a constant rattle from the rear seat area from the day that I brought it home new. I was apparently the only one that could hear it. It didn't do it when someone was in the back seat trying to determine the source. My wife thought I was crazy and being too picky. It never was diagnosed, and I couldn't live with it, or her, so I got rid of both :)

In addition to my 4runner ORP, I have a Jeep that makes all kinds of noises. I expect and actually enjoy the noises and the tank-like ride of my Jeep but wouldn't want to hear anything annoying in my new 4runner. No help to OP, I know, Good luck!

Found some old threads on here involving map light mods. They show how to pull it off. Looks simple enough if you don’t crack a clip. I’m going to give it a go later. I suspect it may be a harness plug bouncing off of something it shouldn’t.

Track the cause down and fix it with a little piece of the fuzzy side of velcro

Why not just open it up? It’s pretty easy, just go slow and use cheap pry tools you can get off Amazon. I’ve opened mine up twice (2022 ORP), once for rattle after installing Meso LED lights, and again after adding a Dongar cable for the Garmin Mini 2 power. Honestly, with exception of engine and frame, our trucks are put together like Lego. I was surprised about that when I took the side mirrors apart.

my 2015 Trail Premium did this also and it was driving me crazy - took it in to the dealer and they fixed it under warranty and I never heard it again :)

Which pry tools did you get? Most seem to thick to be of any use for interior parts.

Does yours have dash cam? Maybe the port guys didn’t snap things tightly. Just a theory

I had a similar rattle. I was sure it was coming from the overhead console. In my case the rattle was actually happening in the little pop-up wind deflector that pops up when the sunroof is open.
If you have a Sunroof on your ORP, then that would be a good area to check out too. The rattle was maddening. With the sunroof closed but the shade opened I was able to touch the aluminum bar and make the rattle stop. I made some hand adjustment to the piece and the rattle has been gone for a year now. Hopefully this will help you track it down.

I've just noticed a rattle coming from the sunroof area on my 2011 Limited. 180K on it, no major problems, but this rattle is driving me nuts! I was assuming that it was the seal that had loosened up after 12 years. I'll check to see if I can adjust the deflector. The rattle definitely goes away when the sunroof is open.
