Does anyone else have an issue while the car is completely off there is a rear humming noise on the left rear of the vehicle?

Yes, perfectly normal. It’s part of the fuel vapor system. I don’t have my manual in front of me ATM but I think this is around page 20-25

“Approximately five hours after the engine is turned off, you may hear sound coming from under the vehicle for several minutes. This is the sound of a fuel evaporation leakage check, and it does not indicate a malfunction”

This article is helpful however what if this continues for more than minutes, say hours.... is that a sign that something else is wrong?

Drove the car this morning, just went in the garage 4+ hours later and noticed it still humming.

It shouldn't hum constantly after shutting it off if that's what you're experiencing. Was it going for four solid hours or it just happened to be going when you went back in the garage?

@codylouie The pump doesn't start until about 4 to 5 hours after you turned off the vehicle. Runs for a few minutes. It's pretty surprising at first but now I might walk out and hear it and realize the timeline lines up perfectly.

I’m so glad I found this. My 2019 4R is my first. I was camping in the middle of the UT desert when I first heard this sound. I thought my tire was leaking air or something else was wrong. Checked air, no issues. Moved on as nothing seemed wrong, glad I now know what this was.

Oh thank you for this page. I was thinking of going back to the dealership. Couldn't understand why a 2022 car will be having a 'problem'. Guess I just have to check the timing then. Thanks a lot for the info.

What about 10 hours after it was driven? Is it still normal to hear it?

Thanks for the insights about this issue. It's my first 4Runner, and I'm still learning!

I just experienced this humming myself and it took me a minute to figure out it was the 4runner but I locked it with the remote and it stopped. Weird. Glad to hear it’s a normal sound and function.

OMG!! Thank you. You allowed me to go back to sleep in peace. I'm at the beginning of a long road trip with my new 2018 forerunner was pre cert. at the dealer so hoping everything was in perfect shape. Was sleeping last night at a campground in the suv and about 1 o'clock heard this humming noise, thought somebody had their generator which is unusual in the middle of the night. I got out to pee and realize it was coming from my truck!! Oh no as I'm out in the middle of nowhere. After a little research I found your posting. You have allowed a little old lady some peace on her road trip thank you so much.

First time I heard this was in my 2014 Tundra while out camping. I thought oh no, my damn fuel pump is running and going to burn out while I'm 5 miles from the pavement. I got in, turned truck on then off and it went away. Later learned it's evap pump that runs randomly.
