For $1,000 from a family friend. It's in excellent condition. But I don't know a thing about 2WD 4Runners. What could I get for it? My guy is telling me $7,000 but I really feel like that's pretty low.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
If it's rust free, then it's worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay. KBB estimates (this is in good condition SR5 model) is worth $6200 - 7800.

Now, that price will vary based on where you live, options, condition of the inside and frame and if there is or is not any body damage. If you paid $1k, you're going to come out a winner and make money on the deal.

Bought an '05 2WD Limited for my daughter about four years ago with 170K, fair/avg. condition outside and inside but in excellent mechanical condition. Paid $7,000 and that was before the used car price run-up. Excellent condition with only 50k? Wow.

Why'd the family friend sell it to you for so cheap?

    $12k easy. I'd start at $14,999

I'd be more concerned why you rip your "friend" off like this.

I would help a "friend" sell it if they were in need but not flip it for a big profit.

This is kinda what I was alluding to with my above comment. If this was a random off the street then go off and make your profit. But since it’s a family friend I’m still curious as to why they sold it for $1k and you’re immediately reselling it for 10x (if not more) than the purchase price. I would be sensitive to the “family friend” relationship if it were me, but it’s not me and we all understand you can do what you want. On the face of it, just seems odd.

We had a 92 4 runner purchased brand new in 92. We sold it to a family friend about 4 years later for well below street value because he was like family. He wanted it because it had low mileage and was meticulously maintained. He drove it for a month and really wasn’t happy with it and wanted to sell it as well. It wasn’t a good fit for him. That 3.0 was a slug and he was a corvette guy. He called before selling it and offered us the difference if it sold for more than we sold it to him for. Because he did the right thing we told him we appreciated his honesty and told him to keep the change.
