    Hi All,

I recently brought my 2015 4runner Limited in for a service. Vehicle has 284k on it. And has been regularly serviced every 15k, except this year when it was 30k (as its been a super super tough year financially... as I'm sure it has been for a lot of people, 2023 can gtfo).

The recommendations I've been given (written below verbatim as they are on my service report) are:

    All Canadian Dollars
    Front Shocks with Hardware $2933.10
    Rear Shocks with Hardware $1086.43
    Alignment (after Front Shocks) $169.95
Rear Brake Pads and Rotors $888.48
    All plus tax and SS

I'm just looking for some advice and thoughts on the above, perhaps some advice on next steps. I have no idea whether this is expensive or cheap? or how to check if it's even necessary?

I am ashamed to admit I know less than zero about vehicles but this year has been very very hard financially on my family and this quote was a massive shock, and it a massive stressor.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place, not sure of the forum expectations. Mods/Members flame away if I need to move/delete this.

    Thank you all in advance.

Was this from a dealership? I would take it to a off road shop for a quote, you can get Kings with resi. Installed for that kind of coin.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

You can get a full set, front and rear of shocks on this site for $269.99. They have some balls to try to charge you $4k for a full set. Do you need UCA and LCA's??

An alignment should be about a $100.

Rear brake pads & rotors can be found on this site for $119.95

The total bill for all of this, including labor and taxes should be way less than what they're trying to charge you.

Hi thank you a bunch for your response.

There is nothing on the quote about control arms, but I will call tomorrow for more detail.
This quote was from a dealership, a toyota one, with a very good reputation I might add, I've been bringing it there for services and repairs since I got it but I feel I might be changing my loyalty.

Thank you for your response. Yes from a dealership. A well renowned toyota one that I've always used for services. I might be changing that though...

There's no reason to bring a vehicle to the dealership for suspension work, especially when it has close to 300k on it.

Nothing wrong with bringing it to the dealership per se, but as you found they tend to charge top dollar. I'm sure a local independent shop will do it much cheaper.

Also, why did you bring it in for service? Did you have a specific complaint?

You may not *need* to do the shocks at all.

And I agree, 2023 can eff right off, it's been a terrible year.

Brought it in as I'd waited 30k since my previous service, I don't have a garage (and live in a very snow/icy clime) so doing my own services is less possible and honestly, I've no knowledge but the way things are going... I might have to learn. There is a bit of squeaking going on though, when going over speed bumps on driving in snow/ice troughs.

Where are you located? Perhaps someone knows an independent shop they could recommend. Sorry to hear of your troubles.

Located in Calgary Alberta. Thank you.

I guess the next step would be to call another shop and get it in for an inspection? or what is my smartest most cost effective next step?

$4k for some oem shocks? Tell them to kick rocks. That’s ADS, Kings, & Fox territory.

With 284k I'm sure it needs new suspension...

Prices quoted are crazy high even in Canadian dollars...

Blown or damaged shocks won't stop the vehicle from rolling down the road, but bad brakes could. I'd suggest like everyone else said and find an offroad shop. Get the rear brakes inspected first, and replaced. A replacement aftermarket suspension all in is under $1400.

And to that point, people have to almost throw away new stock parts when they upgrade to a new suspension. You could look in the used market for a set of takeoff OEM suspension for any model from a 2010-2024 and it will fit your model. Usually only about $200 for the people that are selling those parts, and sometimes free if they've had no luck in selling it. An offroad shop might even have a set of takeoffs they can use.

Jesus that a rip off. Go to a local shop and get a quote. Im a also a firm believer to try and work on your own car or have a friend help. You’ll save $$$$

front and rear shocks (5100 bilsteins) for both sides are like $500.

Rear pads and rotors are under $300

Never am one to name and shame, But ****, to blatantly try and pull this, even in Canada, is a dang shame.

Talk with peers, friends and find a local independent if this is the best your local Dealer is attempting to do. Freaking shameful on their part.

Limited being the fancy trim designed for on-road comfort and handling, has XREAS shocks, i.e. all four shocks x-connected with hydraulic hoses and valves. If you want to restore OEM ride quality, then yes that's the price. Most people balk at the price and just snip the hoses and replace them with regular aftermarket shocks from Monroe, KYB, Bilstein, etc. Watch your local Kijiji or FB Marketplace listings and you may score a set of used SR5 or TRD takeoffs for ~$300-400.

As for whether it's necessary to replace the shocks, you lift up the bellows dust covers on each shock and do a visual inspection for leakage. There's no scheduled maintenance on these shocks; they are due for replacement when the shaft seals wear out and fluid starts leaking. It may take some time before enough fluid leaks out to noticeably affect performance (you notice the front end or rear end bouncing more after an expansion joint or speedbump).

i agree with dumping the XREAS. Sounds like just a lit of cash and problems to deal with
