I was chatting with the distributor rep for Fortaleza at my buddies bar the other day and he said there were 2 full truckloads of Fortaleza that got stolen shortly after crossing the boarder. He said that was a couple months worth of the U.S. supply that disappeared.

Chatting with someone from Fortaleza, they have the plans completed for their distillery expansion and the goal is to have the expansion producing around mid 2025 if it all goes right.

Every distillery that produces actual tequila has a designated NOM number. For example NOM 1123 is Tequila Cascahuin, S.A. and that distillery produces Cascahuin, Siembra Valles, Arte NOM 1123, Montagave, Legado, Lagrimas Del Valle, Wild Common, and a handful of others. NOM 1493 is Fortaleza and they make nothing but Los Abuelos and Fortaleza (same thing but “Los Abuelos” was already copyrighted in the U.S. so it’s called Fortaleza here).

When you get a feel what NOMs you like it can help you determine if a bottle from a brand you don’t know is worth trying. For example tequilas produced at 1123 tend to have earthy notes and pepper on the palate and the distillery is completely additive free. NOM 1414 on the other hand tends to have more bright floral flavors which is hit or miss for me. If I find a 1414 tequila I will pay for a pour to try it to see if I like it. If I found an 1123 bottle I don’t own I buy it.

If something is produced as a NOM that makes 100 low rated brands filled additives, I’m not buying anything produced at that NOM.

I will buy anything from 1493, 1123, 1579, 1120, 1474, 1139, or 1146 without a second thought but I’ll pass on any of the 20ish brands from 1122 for example, which is the Casa Cuervo distillery known for additive filled, low quality, high quantity, celebrity owned brands.

    Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

I'm going to have to start paying attention to this stuff. I like sipping tequila, and I like trying new ones. But, without any guidance, it's an expensive gamble. As far as celebrity owned or endorsed products, I tend to have low expectations. I did like Casamigos Reposado, but I was in a very good mood already when I had it. I'll probably buy another bottle eventually.

If you want a much better repo at a much lower cost look for Volans or Terralta (both NOM 1579), Seite Leguas (NOM 1120), or Tapatio (NOM 1139). Arte NOM 1414 (NOM 1414) might be a little higher priced than the others.

if you want to splurge a bit Siembra Valles Anniversario Joven (NOM 1123) is a one time single batch limited production of what is easily one of the best tequilas ever produced. Drinks like a repo, typically $130-150, I’ve seen it as high as $185. If you’re interested in trying it, you can cover shipping and I’ll mail you a 2 ounce taster bottle - it would be cheaper than a $30-35 pour if you found it at a bar to try.

I'll be checking for those the next time I get to the liquor store. I'm suddenly thinking about stopping at the liquor store today.

That is very generous offer on the Siembra Valles! It almost seems foolish to pass up on. I'd gladly PayPal whatever you think is fair for shipping plus your time.

    Awesome! Thanks again!

Of the 4 you mentioned earlier, it looks like Seite Leguas is the only one available nearby (that I can find online). Looks like I'll be visiting Total Wine in the near future.

Have a great time in Vegas! And, enjoy the holidays!

We were invited to a dinner Wednesday night by a restaurant. It was 6 of us, the restaurant owner, their marketing guy, a rep from the largest liquor distributor in the state, Morgan and I, and another local tequila guy. It was to discuss planning and setting up a legit tequila club in Denver. Dinner m, drinks and deserts were comped all night.

This was our line up of neat pours for the night.

The Bruins took the piss outta the Canucks so bad so many times, especially last game 7 that it was a turning point in my Vancouver hockey interest.
I saw the last home game, unknowingly, before they shut the whole season down for the plandemic.
    Never been back since

Do you do the traditional style (booze, sugar, bitters, water) old fashioned? Or, prohibition style, like we do in Wisconsin (with muddled orange and cherry, and soda)?
