I flew to Colorado to buy mine. Saved thousands. It was worth it despite the long drive home.

Here in Michigan there are deals to be had too. Thousands off MSRP in many cases on higher level trims.

I’ve been on a few road trips, the longest from Atlanta area to Morgantown, WV and back, with some camping and off road trails along the way. It travels great on the highway. I have no issues with the stock ride quality. I haven’t driven KDSS so can’t comment on the difference. Chose no KDSS because of initial cost and perceived complexity.

For reference, my ORP (non-KDSS) was $45k before tax and fees. But, had to drive out of state.

    MSRP.

Here in Hawaii we don't pay a cent over it because all the Toyota dealers are owned by Servco. If you know your sales guy you can get lower than MSRP.

I paid $46,200 before tax for my 2023 TRD ORP (the actual window sticker is below). It has the Premium off road plus package, and includes the "multi-terrain monitors" basically a forward facing cameras and cameras on the side mirrors so you get a (fuzzy) panoramic view of your surroundings.
For comparison the '23 SR5P that I went to the Dealer to buy was $48,xxx with no incentives.

I've owned a stupid number of vehicles in my lifetime and I can honestly say that there is nothing about the 4Runner that makes me want to use it for mountain twisties.

    Wrong vehicle for the job.

A locker is a nice to have, but I think that the MTM and crawl control are where the ORP really. shines.

You ever hit up Quarry Meadows out in Tomah?

My 4R has done mountain twisties with some reluctance on my part. On downhills, the body roll can be downright frightening at the speed on indicated on the yellow turn signs. Uphill is never as bad. Fortunately, I don't mind pulling over to let people by instead of seeing how much harder I can push it.

I’m in Utah & on my 2nd 5th Gen with KDSS (2010 TE, 2023 TRD ORP w/ KDSS). Test drove a non-KDSS before buying both & KDSS definitely handled the “mountain twisties” up/down I-80 to Park City, etc much better (esp with a back end full of gear & mtbs on the hitch rack).

Trips to the beach & easy off-roading? You don’t “need” KDSS or the crawl/MTM features, but imo it definitely handles corners at highway speed better (but as a previous comment highlighted, it’s not a sportscar that can corner on rails, but a sportscar doesn’t haul as much cargo when you need to…)

You can’t go wrong either way so it probably really comes down to budget and availability. I’d definitely go ORP with KDSS tho :)

MSRP for a TRD ORP starts at $48,275 and with Texas tax (I forget if OP was here) of 6.25% that kicks it up to $51,292 before destination and TTL so their OTD quote doesn’t strike me as crazy albeit a big chunk of change.

Unless MSRP is meant to be the OTD price?

Paid somewhere around $47K for our 4R Limiteds back in August. The price of the Limited with discounts can be close to the ORP Premium and SR5 Premium. I chose the Limited because I use the extra features every day (full time 4WD, XRAES, stereo, leather, etc) and in our snowy winter climate, the 4WD system is loads better for light off roading, commuting and highway travel as it’s always engaged (same essential system as the Land Cruiser). The XRAES system is night and day compared to our SR5. There’s almost no body lean on highway ramps and the ride is smoother and much more controlled. I assumed id rip the suspension out at 100K or whenever it starts to leak, but I’ll probably replace it. I like it a lot.

I second this. Why in the hell would I expect my 4Runner to be a fun twisty road vehicle??? My GTI is my fun twisty road vehicle, thing handles like a go-kart, love it.

You’re correct about “expecting” the 4Runner to be the ideal vehicle for twisty roads, but sometimes to get to and from many off road trails, you have to drive on winding roads (such as going up and down to Big Bear, CA) and that’s when you will appreciate KDSS.

You can’t take your GTI on the Holcomb Creek Trail

Some people have no choice - they live in or around the mountain twisties, or have to negotiate them to access off-road areas or ski areas.. Mountain West is ideal for KDSS, Florida or Kansas plains not so much.

Despite the over inflated prices who is in charge you or them? Who set's the price the buyer or seller? My dealer is notorious for overpricing people but I was able to walk in and just tell them I'm not paying over MSRP. That's it. I think $51k is only about $2k over usual MSRP. Depending on your trade value and negotiating skills you should be able to knock off some under $49k. Good luck. The ORP is what I got and you probably won't regret it.

Of course very true, but all I'm saying KDSS or no KDSS... it's still a slow 5700 lb machine, it's gonna drive like a tank in mountain twisties.

In my neck of the woods(mountains) twisties are unavoidable. I don’t have it to have fun, I have it to get to where I need to go with more confidence and better handling. The enhanced articulation is secondary to me as this is a garage queen, I use Goldie to get pinstripes.

The valley(4,800’) where we live is sandwiched between the Sierra Nevada mountain range(NV side) and the Pinenut mountain range. My wife needs to see a high-end vision specialist(she’s going blind) on a fairly regular basis in the near sea level SF area(180 miles total, 80 miles in the mountains) which requires going over a Sierra Nevada mountain pass. The shortest/fastest pass for us is a very twisty Rt88(Carson Pass@8,600’). They measure snowfall up there in feet, not inches. Last winter they got +50 feet.

A KDSS equipped 4R is the IDEAL vehicle for the job, summer and winter combo.

I didn't realize it went up that much.

I don't remember the exact $ but back in 17 when I got my 18 it was closer to $40. Regular OR. Guess $51k is the new norm.

Same here. OR (non-premium) $41k out the door including TTL in September 2019. I don't think I would even be considering a 4R at today's prices.

Those who intentionally chose KDSS for what it's designed to do can attest that it's a bit less tankish because of having it.

My well-optioned non KDSS ORP was $49,973 in April 2022. That was MSRP. Added to that was the 6.6% one time ad valorem tax in GA.

According to Lexus, it will be electronic instead of hydraulic.
