Interesting information on break in oil change. Screen shot is from the links below. Guy analyzed a 2023 Corolla oil three times.
    1st - used factory installed 0W-8 at 728 miles
    2nd - unused Toyota 0W-16
    3rd - used Toyota 0W-16 with 2,342 miles (3,070 total engine miles)
It appears there are no special treatment chemicals in the factory installed 0W-8 compared to the standard Toyota 0W-16. One of the arguments against a break in oil change is that there are special additives in the factory installed oil.
The chart also shows a high amount of "Total Wear Metals" suspended in the factory installed 0W-8.
The two videos linked below are pretty solid evidence that multiple early oil changes are wise.

Thanks. Just had Toyota change my oil at 371 miles on the clock and the service guy was a jerk about my decision. Plan on a second change at 1,500.

one small correction: original factory filled Toyota oil in Toyota 4Runner is bulk #00279-0W201 and has all additives of Toyota specifications, especially 785 parts of Molybdenum, and I have confirmation of it from laboratory, where I sent sample from from like 20 first miles of my new T4R. Toyota not fooling around with engines and calculate that 10K miles NOT POSSIBLE without Toyota special additives package. You changed oil at 371 miles, but you do not know what oil you got. send sample to the lab. moist likely on US soil at dealership your T4Runner was filled with bulk oil Mobile 1 0W20, and due to extensive research Exxon scientists developed that oil that satisfied Toyota requirements for engine maintenance after 5K miles special operation or 10K miles normal operations. but that oil has only 85 parts of Molybdenum. and it's OK, since in theory break-in period was with TGMO 0W20. You would be better of if you change for oil, that you personally buy at the dealership parts counter case of 6qt #00279-0WQTE. it all depends how long you want to have your T4R and at what mileage 1GR-FE starts smoking, starts consume oil, VVTi starts making ticking noises etc.
as of Corolla 0W8, 0W16 - there is no such oil in bulk quantities, only in qt, at list for now that I know.

You should know the Corolla in the video is like the lawn mowers at Project Farm - disposable appliances to be experimented on for science ;)

Wait, so I'm the ONLY guy who changes his oil every-single-Sunday, right before my weekly fill up? C'mon guys, changing it every 5/10k is for suck-ahs!

Thank you for the thoughtful reply, Startrek.

On the dealer website, they claim to use official Toyota motor oil. I called today and spoke with 2 service members. The first couldn't answer my questions and my call was forwarded. The second provided answers. He has held his position for 12 years. The questions and answers to follow, but first I want to say that I'm a firm believer in trust but verify.
Asked if the oil used was a bulk product. Obviously, it is.
Asked who manufactures it, answer Mobil 1.
Asked if it's formulated any differently than the product in individual quarts, answer no, it's the same formulation.
Re-asked to confirm moly content specifically, answer was yes, same moly content.
Asked what weight was used, answer 0W-20.
Asked if I could buy the oil in quarts and have the tech install it, answer yes (for an upcharge).
Asked if I could bring in sample collection vessel and have it filled, answer yes.

My plan is to order the quarts, pay the extra cost, and have a sample of the oil used to replace the factory installed oil taken/analyzed. Will keep this thread updated.

I realize it's hard to fathom that someone is unwilling to do their own menial service work, but those days are behind me forever. Been there, done that for too long.

Bro, you should be topping off the fuel tank daily with non-ethanol gas to avoid sludge...

The owner's manual says break-in period is 1000 miles, so that's the only traceable reference for doing a break-in oil change. Anything else is just guessing.

On one hand, my gut tells me to do my first oil change at 1500 or 2000 miles. But then I read about the ridic longevity of the 4L v6 and the quality oil Toyota puts in from the factory, and I wonder if waiting to 5,000 miles until the 1st oil change is actually not a bad idea. On any GM/Stellantis product I can see dumping the factory fill at 1,500 miles but I just feel like in the case of the 4Runner, it might be a waste....

I think I had about 6,700 miles before my first oil change. In hindsight, I wish I would have done it sooner. I have since been on a 5000 mile interval. So far so good.

The manual being as thick as it is talks way too little about anything break-in related. 15 years ago it was almost a ritual for break-in, kind of like oil change intervals. 3k miles seems too soon and 10k seems like too much. Ultimately you make the decision

Some sources say that 0W-20 oil is optimal to 67* ambient temperature, and works well up to 87* ambient temperature. If one looks at an oil viscosity/temperature chart it appears to show that for each 10 weight of increase in viscosity, there is a corresponding 10* increase in which the oil works well to. In other words, if a 20 weight oil works well to 87*, a 30 weight oil works well to 97*, and a 40 weight oil works well to about 107*. Ambient temps for all.
Going with that, an 8 weight oil would work well only up to 70-75*. I live in the Central Valley of California where temps are routinely about 100* in the summer time, and it would scare me to run an 8 weight oil in those temps. No wonder there were elevated levels of metal in the oil.
Is it 0W-8 just for break in, and then 0W-16 for use after that? I still wouldn't use oil that light where I live.

I live in central South Carolina where the high temperature in July and August are always at least mid 90s so my intention is to switch from 0W-20 to 5W-30 on my next oil change. I actually had planned on doing it on this oil change but I had second thoughts due to the ambient temperatures we have in the next 3 months.
